  1. Casual gamer - New tv vs Xbox One X / Xbox S?

    Hi Guys,

I'm a casual gamer using the original Xbox One and a Samsung UE48H6400AK TV.

I mostly play Forza, although enjoy a raft of other games on occasion.

Now that Forza 7 is on its way and looks amazing in 4K I'm having a tough time deciding what route to take re: upgrading equipment, simply because I do not know enough about this stuff!

I'm looking for advice- if I want to make the most of Forza 7 in 4K I understand I should buy a new 4k TV and the Xbox One X, however, being a casual gamer, it's unlikely I will spend £1000+ on changing the setup just to get the best experience.

As such, would anyone have any advice if I were to replace one piece of equipment to make the most gains?

Should I buy a 4k TV and use the original Xbox? Or buy an Xbox one S and use my existing TV? Or a One X and the original TV?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

    :)

Lovely! That solves my dilemma then - Xbox One X now, 4K tv later!

    Thanks!

There would really be no point in buying the 4k TV and using the original Xbox unless you just want a 4k TV. If you're planning on buying a 4k TV anyway, I would get the One X, just to go ahead and make use of 4k. Otherwise, I'd just get the One S and use
your existing TV. That would be the best route to go without spending a lot of money.

  5. Thanks for the reply. If I were to get a 4K TV, would you say that the graphical difference between the One S and One X is highly noticeable to a casual gamer?

I've done a little bit of research on the Internet but I'm slightly confused by all the various stats, I'd be interested to know if you think my current TV support HDR?

And lastly, I hear what you're saying about getting the Xbox One X and my current TV, however if I were to do that thinking I might buy a 4K TV in the future, would I get a display in HDR on my current TV, similar to as if I bought The One S?

At the moment I would say to just wait for the Xbox One X to be released as I'm sure some retailers will have demo units set up and running on 4K televisions. In addition to this as this years models of televisions have only recently been release the prices
may still be a little high.

As for your current television it looks like it does not have HDR so for now I would say just keep using your existing Xbox One for now.

I saw on another thread someone has indicated that even on a 1080p tv you should notice a slightly better image when using the X vs the standard Xbox One, so that may even be argument to get the X first and the TV later when the time is right, and as you
say, when the prices are right Casual gamer - New tv vs Xbox One X / Xbox S? ;)

You're definitely right on this, yes. What happens with Xbox One X on a 1080p television is something called Supersampling - the new console will still render the image in 4K using the 4K assets downloaded by the X. Then, will reformat the image properly
when sent to your television, resulting in a higher-fidelity image than the current Xbox One can provide. Even the Xbox One S still uses the lower-quality assets, upscaled to a 4K image if the TV is compatible, so the image quality for Xbox One S on a standard
1080p TV is really no different than a standard Xbox One.

Also, X will have a lot more going for it than 4K native and HDR - increased processing power and enhanced memory will result in smoother, more reliable gameplay, as well as the ability for developers to increase draw distance (the horizon is closer to the
horizon now) and more moving assets onscreen, for a richer world.

If I had to pick, I'd splurge on X1X first, then save to upgrade to a 4K TV later. Hope this helps!

    Hi Buddy,

There are lots of options here for you and I know in some of the other comments people are advising you to stay clear etc however I have a very different opinion on this for a couple of reasons. First of all I am a massive techy and I have a good set up
with 4K TV, 7.1 surround sound etc, not saying I am an expert but I feel I can offer advise.

Currently I have a Samsung JU6800 4K TV which I am very happy with and has all the bells and whistles on it and it wasn't that much money. Due to my old TV been ok but not the best I took the plunge to upgrade my TV and it's great at works great with the
XB1s and will with the XBX too. As long as it has HDR you are pretty much sorted, you can look at the latency too but it's not a massive issue. You don't have to pay thousands. I believe Major Nelson did a little review of TV's on his blog when the S was out
    roughly. Hope this helps?

I am a massive Forza racer too and my YouTube channel features a lot of it and is 90% dedicated to racing games and completely understand then need for this to look it's best.
