capture stored on External Hard Drive on Xbox Series S cannot be found on the computer

Hello,

I have followed the instructions at the link here :

to set up an external hard drive as my capture location on my xbox series s

The setup went fine, and the xbox was able to recognize the external HDD . I chose use for media, and then set it up as my capture location.

Then, I made a couple 1 min clip and a couple screenshot. They could be easily found in the "Capture" App on the xbox and they were stored under the filter "external storage"

So far so good !

After shutting down the console, I unplugged the HDD and plugged it into my computer.

I could not find any of the clip nor the screenshot. Weirdest, no storage space was apparently taken on the HDD.

I thought the clips were deleted or that I wrongly eject the HD from the xbox, but when I plugged the external HDD back to the xbox series S, well I could find all the clips captured on the external HDD and watch them on the xbox.

I would like to be able to capture the clip to that external HDD , then plug that HDD into my computer for editing or storing.

What should I have done to achieve that?

Don't worry we will work on this together. I really can feel you here however the format for the console and PC will be different. Once you selected the format for Xbox, you can only access the files on your console.

Get a PS5, problem solved. you can play games on external sdd no problems attached

You cannot store or play PS5 games from an external drive. At least with the Series X/S consoles, you can store the Series X/S games to external drives. You just have to move them to internal storage to play them. You can play PS4 games from an external drive hooked up to a PS5 though, just like you can play Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games from an external drive connected to a Series X/S.

You need an expansion card for most Series X/S titles, as external hard drives are not fast enough to run these games. You can store these games on the hard drive but to play them you'll need to move them to internal storage or an expansion card.

Games from Xbox One or earlier and select Series X/S titles can be stored and played on an external hard drive.

An external hard drive used on the One will work for the Series S/X, but won't have the exact same performance as the one created for the Series S/X.

Yes you can! As the Series S has limited space on the drive, you can connect an external hard drive to store games and media.

Are you sure about that?

I've got a Series S and all of my Series X|S games can ONLY run from either internal or expansion storage, they won't run from a slow external mechanical hard drive. Even an external SSD isn't considered quick enough for these games.

XBox One games can run from either but Series optimised games must run on internal or expansion.

You can back up Series games to external, but not run them there.
