Can't use Microsoft Account Balance to change Gamertag?

As the title states, when I go to change my Gamertag on my console, an option to use my Microsoft Account balance is there, but it is greyed out. I know the total cost is $9.99, but it won't even let me use the balance and then pay for the remaining amount.

Is there a reason for this?

To use your Microsoft balance You need to change your region to Japan, so You can spend Yen, If You don't change It, You can't spend yen which is in your Microsoft Balance.

do you know if you have enough to cover the taxes? because that is what xbox support will tell you

 

Hey Z4ZoneE! I currently have $8.15 and it costs $9.99. My balance is expiring in June, and I don't know how else to get it up to $9.99 (Besides doing the monthly surveys through Xbox Live Rewards).

Also, I read that there should not be any tax applied to this purchase. Am I wrong?

 

as far as tax goes, it really depends on the state you live in. and the amount that you have, you can go to the store and get a 10 dollar card for the console to add more money onto it, or you can just use a credit card to pay for the gamertag change

 

That makes sense. So, I guess if I did have enough in my balance to cover the total cost (with tax if applicable), then I could use it right? Just want to make sure I can use my Microsoft Account Balance before I purchase points from a third party.

 

yea, you should also be able to pay with part of the credit card and then the rest from the xbox but of course if that doesn't work, paying with the credit card is always an option, then you can save the balance on the xbox for something else

 

So I tried adding in a credit card hoping I could split the purchase, but still no luck. Hopefully Support can get back to me on this. I would really just like to spend the $8.15 in my Account Balance as I have been saving it up just for this.

 

I just experienced this issue, having redeemed a $10 Xbox digital gift card from Microsoft Rewards.

I was trying to make the purchase through the web, and the dialog that came up asked how I wanted to pay for the rest. Unfortunately, it did not say how much the rest was, so I did not know whether the rest was $9.99 (i.e., my credit cannot be used and
sales tax is not charged), $10.61 (i.e., my credit cannot be used and sales tax is charged), or $0.61 (i.e., my credit can be used and sales tax is charged).

I contacted Xbox Live Support, and the representative thought it might be sales tax but was unsure.

We were able to determine that sales tax *is* charged, so the problem was simply that I did not have enough credit.
