Can't update XBOX One (offline and online)

Hi,

someone recently won an out of the box XBOX One (that was probably sitting on the supermarket shelves since 2014/2015) at a charity bingo

Since it was given to the charity by the supermarket there's no receipt and no warranty (and from what I understand Microsoft doesn't support the console anymore)

When the person started the XBOX it said it needed to update and an error occured during the update.

The console was never used or booted before.

My mother in law being one of the person in charge of the charity bingo and me being the computer guy of the family I was asked to try and fix it.

I went to XBOX support pages and followed the steps

Here's what I tried so far

Nothing I tried ever gave me the menu where I can choose to wipe or troubleshoot the console.

Normal boot:

XBOX splash screen OK

Asks to pair the controler, pairing OK

Says it's updating, and an error occured, no error code

Checked network connected, both wirefless and wired are OK

Pressed both triggers and bumpers to have additional information

Error code 0x80072efe XBOX Live server unreachable, I guess the adress changed since the console was made, or maybe the console is not meant to be updated anymore and there's no more server.

Pair + Eject boot with no external device:

Console says it's preparing

Preparing goes through

Console reboots

Then it's like normal boot

Pair + Eject boot with external device loaded with content of OSU3.zip

Console says it's preparing

Preparing goes through

System Error E101

Pair + Eject boot with external device loaded with content of OSU2.zip

Console says it's preparing

Preparing goes through

Console reboots

Then it's like normal boot

Pair + Eject boot with external device loaded with content of OSU1.zip

Console says it's preparing

Console says it's updating

Update starts

Update gets stuck at 74% overall (29% of step 3 of update)

I tried it three times and it always gets stuck at the same percentage.

last time I even let it run throught the night to find it still stuck at 29%

Now before I go on to open the console and test out the hardrive

is there anything more I can do ?

In case the problem comes from a faulty hard drive, and the lady is willing to purchase a new harddrive can I put "any" SATA hardrive/SSD or is there certain models only ?

yeah that would have been my wild guess hence my question, if I was to try and change the HDD is it compatible with every HDD/SSD or shall I stick to certain refrences (at least for testing purpose) ?

First Step (On the Computer):

Plug your USB flash drive into a USB port on your computer.

Select the following link to download the reset file to your computer: https://www.xbox.com/xboxone/restorefactorydefaults

Select Save to save the console update.zip file to your computer (if it doesn't download automatically).

To unzip the compressed file, right-click on the file and then select Extract all from the pop-up menu.

Copy the $SystemUpdate file from the .zip file to your USB flash drive

Second Step (On your console):
---------------------------------------------------

Unplug the network cable if you're using a wired network connection.

Power off your console, and then unplug the power cord to ensure that the console is completely powered off.

Wait 30 seconds, and then plug the power cord back in.

Plug the flash drive into a USB port on your console. For more information, see:

Press and hold the Pair button (Xbox Series X|S: located on the front next to the USB port) and the Eject button (Xbox Series X: located just above the disk drive slot), and then press the Xbox button on the console.

Note The Xbox Series S and the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition do not have an Eject button. On this console, you only need to hold the Pair button and then press the Xbox button.

Continue holding the Pair button and Eject button for 10-15 seconds.

Listen for two "power-up" tones a couple of seconds apart.

You can release the Pair button and Eject button after the second power-up tone.

When the console restarts, remove the flash drive.

Once the console restarts, you should see the digital setup experience to guide you through resetting your console.

I forgot I already tried that one

I tried again but when it boots it just keeps saying it need to update like the normal boot

for the life of me I can't get the troubleshooting or offline update menus I see in the videos or tutorials, I can't help but think I'm doing it wrong

I'm happy to help clarify things with you.

To clarify, an Xbox One console can be used offline provided it is put into offline mode and here's how! Using Xbox One offline

The console does need to be updated when it's first out of the box, this can be done offline as well though, you'll just need to use the offline update tool here. I

Of course like you mentioned, some games require an online connection such as MMORPG's like The Elder Scrolls Online and that's consistent across all platforms including PC. Not all games require this though, It's on a case by case basis and up to the developers.
Check the game packaging for more information on if an online connection is required to play.

That said, you can also use many game discs offline without updating though. In fact, it's actually a troubleshooting step to install games to the console offline if someone is having an issue installing the update during the game install.

I hope this helps to clarify things a bit for you and give you some ideas on how you can play Xbox One offline if you prefer to play offline.
