Can't update software from USB flash drive

    Hello there,

I'm trying to update my Xbox 360 Elite using a USB flash drive (because it can't connect to Xbox Live) and have tried everything the "How
to get a new Xbox 360 update
" site told me to do, but the Xbox just won't start the update process. My Dashboard version is 2.0.14719.0 and I'm using this flash drive: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C980Z2O/.

    What I've done, in particular:

    1. Formatted the drive on a Windows 7 PC to FAT32 (was using ext4 before), downloaded update from above mentioned site, unzipped the $systemupdate directory (yes, the directory, not its content) to the drive, safely removed the drive, plugged it into the Xbox,
      restarted it. Nothing happened.
    2. Formatted the drive on a Windows 7 PC to exFAT (was using FAT32, as mentioned before) to make sure that the Xbox would format it to its "own" FAT32 file system (I've read that it could be necessary to let the drive be formatted by the Xbox), put the $systemupdate
directory on the drive, safely removed it, plugged it into the Xbox, "Settings -> System -> Storage -> [USB drive] -> Customize -> Reserved Storage 8 GB", waited for the configuration to finish, unplugged the drive, plugged it into the Windows PC to make
sure it was formatted using FAT32 (it was, and it was empty, as expected), placed the $systemupdate directory on the drive, safely removed it, plugged it back into the Xbox, rebooted it. Nothing happened.
    3. Downloaded the software update that was released closest to the version I already have installed and was still available (I used Xbox 360 system software - Wikipedia),
placed it on the (emptied) drive, safely removed it, plugged it into the Xbox, restarted it. Nothing happened. (I did this to ensure that the problem would not be the gap between the currently installed version and the latest available software version.)
I have no idea what else to do, can someone help me out here?

    :)

Updating Tips for Xbox 360 console software

Your Xbox console software always needs to be updated with new features for better performance.

Are you experiencing these types of problems?

    • Disappearing Dashboard themes
    • Missing Avatars
    • Malfunction of the Kinect sensor

These can all be solved easily by updating your console software.

How to Update Xbox console software

You can simply update your console software in any one way as following:

You can install the updates from Xbox Live

    or
You can install from the Game disc or USB Flash Drive or Burned CD or DVD.

How to Update from Xbox live

It’s very easy to update the console software from Xbox live. The only thing you need to do that is connect your console to internet.

    Follow these few steps:

    1. Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and select System Settings.
    2. Go to Network Settings.
    3. Select Wired Network or the name of your wireless network, if you are prompted to do so.
    4. Press Test Xbox LIVE Connection.
    5. Press yes if you are prompted to update the console software.

If you cannot connect your Console to the Internet, you can try to get support from the Xbox LIVE Connect Solution.

    Or

You can update your software in other ways.

Update console software from a Game disc or Flash Drive or Burned CD/DVD

You can easily update your console software from a Game disc which includes a newer version of the console software. You need to perform the task at the time of starting. If you do not choose to update, you can do it at the next start.

You can also install updates from a USB Flash Drive. To do this, you need to download the updates and save them on your computer and then copy them to a USB Flash drive. Plug the Flash drive into your console and restart it. The installation will start automatically.

Note: If you are using Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, unzip the downloaded .zip file and copy them to the root directory of the USB Flash drive.

You can also burn the downloaded files onto a blank writable CD/DVD. Then insert the CD/DVD into your console. Restart the console and the installation will start automatically. Press yes if you want to perform the updates.

Note: If you are using Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, unzip the downloaded zip file and copy it to the root directory of the CD/DVD. If you are using an earlier version of Windows, you need special software like “winzip” to unzip the file. Then click to write or Burn.

There is no cost for updating your Console software. New games might require an update to the current software. In addition, Kinect games might not play properly with the back dated software. Always remember that you cannot get back to an earlier version once your software has been updated.

  4. Can't update software from USB flash drive

Miscrosoft sucks. I spent 2 hours chatting with someone 2 days ago and he told me that they were working on getting a fix for this. Then, today I chatted with another person about this issue and they told me the only option was to send it in to be repaired.
She also mentioned that she had a 4gb console and opted to play offline and that the update may have been too much for the console to handle. WTF??? It sounds to me like it wouldn't be a repair but an upgrade, and she told me it would be about $100 to "fix".
I've seen other posts about this issue and some say send it in, one said he was told by MS that there was a corrupt file in the update, and others say go to Sony, we dont have these problems. I just hope that some fix is in the pipeline for this.
