Can’t send messages or reply on Xbox 360 (enter gamertag button greyed out)

So I got an Xbox 360 about last week (yes I know I’m veeeery late since this is the original) and I was hooked to it 24/7. Well not literally, but that’s beside the point. So I tried to go onto the messaging tab and selected Create New Message. But, the
Enter Gamertag button is greyed out. My friend messaged me and I couldn’t reply since the reply button was also greyed out. My console is not console banned nor is my Xbox Live account, if I recall. So if anyone can give me some help, I would greatly appreciate
it!

I am not exactly sure what the issue is with your console, but when it comes to sending messages I would highly recommend you to download the Xbox app on your smartphone and send messages from there. It is much more convenient plus the app offers you a
lot of extras. It is available both on iOS and Android.

I have done what you have posted on Xbox 360 and I can now receive, read and reply to messages on Xbox 360 but I still can’t send messages or read them on Xbox one or Xbox app.

From the below it appears that the default is text and if you want to send voice you have to select the microphone.

Send messages to friends

To send messages to one of your friends through Xbox One:

Sign in to Xbox Live.

On your Xbox One Wireless Controller, press the Xbox button.

Go to the Friends hub and select Friends online.

Highlight the friend's gamertag, and then press the A button on your controller.

Select Send and then select Message to send a text message, or select the microphone icon to send a voice message.

Enter or record your message.

When finished, select Send.

If you click on a Gamertag and see there profile page the message button to the left under their avatar is greyed?

Can you click on your account here on the Xbox website in the upper right corner, and go to your Messages? Are you able to send messages there?

Do you get an error message when sending messages from your Xbox One? What exactly prevents you from sending messages on your Xbox One?

I can't send messages on here as it says it's due to my past behavior. Same with my Xbox one and app. I can send them on my 360 but they don't go through. If I play a 360 game on my one the option to message is greyed out.
