Can't read this disc errors... (0x80820002)

I've had my Xbox One since Xmas and just started having this problem in the last month or so. 0x80820002 error - usually when I put in a blu-ray disc. Occasionally I'll get this error when I put in a game disc - never with a DVD - DVD's seem to work fine
every time. If I hold the power button for 10 seconds and restart the machine, this usually fixes the problem, but honestly it's starting to annoy me. It all feels very random - sometimes a blu-ray will work fine, sometimes that same disc won't load... over
and over and over again, until I reset the machine.

Yes, I try to stay on top of all updates to the controller and the system.

Usually this means that the disc is dirty or damaged and the console is unable to read it. Let's have you try this guide and see if it helps out.

I just bought an XBox One yesterday and today I set it up. When I insert discs I get an error 0x80820002 and it won't read any of my Games, Blu-Rays or CD's. Anybody else have this issue?

 

Try going to Settings>Disc&BluRay>Clear persistent storage.

Does that help?

Also try a power cycle of the console (support.xbox.com/.../power-cycle-console).

I should have mentioned that I did try those things - as well as turning on and off the 24hrz option. One thing I have not tried is clearing persistent storage before I do anything new on the console - but even if that worked, it surely can't be how it's
supposed to work.

I'll try clearing persistent storage after I finish playing a game or watching a blu-ray or whatever and see if I notice the box more willing to accept discs.

Oddly, today I tried to put in a regular DVD - Veggie Tales for my little son - and this was the first time it couldn't read a DVD. Usually it's just Blu-Ray's and every so often a game. I did a power cycle on the console, reinserted the DVD and it played
fine.

Weird.

 

OK, so try clearing the persistent storage followed by another power cycle and then report back.

 

Ok - I cleared persistent storage, followed by a power cycle.

Put in a Blu-Ray that I got from Netflix that I've not yet been able to get to play (The Lone Ranger) - Put it in and *nothing* - No error message, no nothing. This is the first time that has happened. Gave it 4 or 5 minutes, then hit eject. Reinserted
the same Blu-Ray disc. This time I got the "sorry can't play this disc" 0x80820002 error code.

Then decided to put in a Blu-Ray that I had played successfully this morning for my son (The Lion King) This time, rather than a successful play I got the 0x80820002 error code. Seemed like clearing persistent memory and cycling made it worse, but really
it just feels pretty random. I suppose I could cycle the power again The Lion King would probably play fine.

It's frustrating. The Blu-Ray aspects of this Xbox One do *not* look very well executed to me.

 

I had to restore my console back to the original settings. I could not play anything, games, music, DVD/Blu-Ray, nothing. I did a restore to default and now my drive works.

Will I lose all my data? Downloaded games and such?

 

You will lose downloaded games (but can re-download these later at no cost as they are tied to your account) and save files will be deleted off the console but can be re-synced from the cloud, provided that the last time you played each game you were connected
to Live the cloud save will be the latest save you have.

 

I'm connected to Live each time I play, so is the cloud automatically handling that background syncing? I ask only because I don't really remember doing anything to set that up specifically.

Once I feel satisfied the cloud has me backed up, I'll google how to revert to factory settings and give this solution a try.

 

I've been having this same problem ever since the very first preview update came out in 1403. I'm now getting ready to do an advanced exchange. I don't see how a Factory Reset will fix the gears grinding.

 

@atDoc: In this thread there was no mention of grinding gears, it seems to be a software error. Your issue is separate and different.

@hammerclown: Yes, it is done automatically in the background provided you were connected.

To revert to factory settings, go to Settings>System>Restore Factory Defaults

Getting ready to ship it out... just doesnt make sense why the drive suddenly stops working?

still feels like software issue... but i guess several people's normally working xbox ones's optical drive could have started failing independently..

I am in the same boat as Doc here, not sure who to call as i dont believe I got any extended warranty, then again I've only had mine since Xmas time as well, any help there, never had an issue like this before.
