Can't purchase Backwards Compatible game from the microsoft store

    Hey all,

I've been wanting to try out Halo Reach on the xbox one with backwards compatibility.

I've never owned an xbox360 and I don't own a physical copy of the game.

So I tried buying it through the microsoft store.

After selecting "see price", I am prompted with this message:

Sorry, we had trouble loading some details. Please try again later.

    No valid payment options.

As a matter of fact, I have a credit card linked to my account and redeemed a prepaid gift card code with enough credit on it to buy the game outright.

So it would appear I actually do have valid payment options?

But they don't show up and I can't add any other payment options.

Since the error suggested to "try again later", I did: I've tried this multiple times over the course of a few days, both through the xbox one itself and on pc, same result.

On pc the microsoft store first redirects me to the old xbox360 version of the store.

When I try adding another payment option there, it throws up an "unknown error" and "oops that shouldn't have happened" with no extra info or link.

I'd really like to buy the game and purchasing it online through the store is my only option so this really bums me out...

    Any help would be appreciated!

    :)

Can't purchase Backwards Compatible game from the microsoft store

Xbox 360 content, like "Halo: Reach", can not be purchased using Microsoft account funds unless you are actually making the purchase on an Xbox 360 console. So if you're paying on the website or on your Xbox One, the account funds won't be used.

So your attached payment method should qualify, if it is a legitimate payment method. See if this
    link
works instead. It's for the US version of the Xbox 360 marketplace. Be sure you're signed in with your Microsoft account, and click on 'Download to Xbox 360' (it's okay if you don't have one).

Hi, things work very strangely when it comes to backwards compatible titles and payment options added on an Xbox One, for whatever reason you can't use a payment option to purchase these games if you added it on an Xbox One, you have to add the payment option
    on an Xbox 360..........funky huh

    Troubleshoot Xbox 360 Marketplace Purchasing

I added a payment option to my account at account.microsoft.com or on my Xbox One console, but I don't see the payment option when I try to purchase.

If you don't see the payment option when you try to make a purchase, you need to add
the payment option on your Xbox 360 console

Okay that clears some things up, so I can't use my account funds because I don't have access to an xbox 360!

I tried using the link you provided and ran into the same problem again, 'no valid payment options'.

When I click the 'add payment option' button I receive the 'unknown error' with a lot of code specifying 'date', 'code', 'mn' and 'req'.

I can provide these error codes if they could help solve the problem.

But if I understand correctly I should just be able to buy the game with my credit card that is linked to my account currently.

I've recently purchased xbox one games with that same card through the microsoft store and that worked fine so the card should be legitimate, right?

I live in Europe though, is Halo Reach or backwards compatibility not available here maybe?

I have changed the region of the store to my country so the prices are displayed in euros, the currency we use here.

You'll be able to purchase Xbox One games for sure, it's the 360 games you'll have problems purchasing. Do you know anyone who has a 360 at all ? you could maybe add your account to that 360, add your card as a payment option, remove your account from the
360, then you'll be able to purchase xbox 360 games on your Xbox One.

It's a weird situation but as it states on the link in my previous post, if you're not seeing a payment option then you need to add the payment option on a 360.

All my friends are playstation fans and I don't know anyone with a working 360.

    So I don't think I can get access to a 360.

This would mean there is actually no way for me to buy Reach, or any backwards compatible game for that matter?

It does look that way doesn't it, from what I can gather it's due to the differences between the Xbox Marketplace and Xbox Store. You'd think that wouldn't make any difference but it seems it does.

I'm not even sure Xbox support can do anything to help but it never hurts to try.

    Alright...

On a forum somewhere someone suggested buying a specific Halo Reach game code.

It's a code that directly acquires the game for Xbox 360.

I've found one from a local online game store.

    Would that work?

Because I wouldn't want to waste 20 bucks for a code that doesn't do anything.

    That's my last option.

In theory you'd think a download code would work but to be honest I really wouldn't like to say it will for sure. Lots of things were region locked on the 360 so getting a code for your region could be a job and a half in itself.

Can't purchase Backwards Compatible game from the microsoft store

Hey, a little update on the situation.

After checking every available region for the download code I decided to go ahead and purchase it.

On the site it specifically stated the code was for my country.

    And miraculously, it worked!

I think this might be the only way to acquire a backwards compatible game online for people with the same problem as me.

This or buying an actual physical disk from 2010.

Next problem is that Halo Reach doesn't offer any language options, so the entire campaign is dubbed in french and I can't change it because the download code I got is region specific...

And when I try to play splitscreen, my friend can't sign in.

When he tries to log in we instantly get a message that we got 'disconnected from live' and an error.

The error says 'your profile is not completely downloaded' and doesn't even show his avatar or profile picture, it's just a blank image.

He never had a 360 account and only created his microsoft account last year so this might be the reason for this problem.

He doens't have gold either, but for other (xbox one) games this never meant he couldn't play splitscreen.

We already tried removing the profile on the xbox one and redowloading it but that didn't help.

I even logged him in on my pc version of the orignal Halo 2 for windows vista, and customized his account through there, thinking it might prompt the system to recognize it as a 360 account or something but that didn't help either.

Still very annoying because now his progress can't be kept and even his controller buttonlayout gets reset every time we play.

But all in all, I'm happy I finally managed to purchase Reach and get the game running.

Maybe I'll start another thread for the remaining problems.

Thanks everybody for your help, greatly appreciated!

Not every Backward Compatible Xbox 360 games can be purchased from the Microsoft Store. But having checked, the game has been delisted from the store anyway. So the only way to purchase it now is by getting the disc version of the game.
