Can't play game while downloading patch

Hello is it normal that I can't play a game while the console is downloading a Patch for that game?

I have Xbox series X and I wanted to play Cyberpunk 2077. So I installed the game but it wouldn't let me play it before downloading a huge day 1 patch.

So I had to wait till next day till it downloads and installs overnight.

I played for few hours and now it started downloading and installing another patch 16gb for which I'm going to wait another few hours.

Why can't the console just download the patch in background while I play and then install it when it finishes downloading?

This is because it needs to rewrite some of the files that are there and add new ones too . This is the same for most games. Just play another game or watch tv lol.

Because its replacing data all over the game files as it goes. The alternative is thst you need to have 2-3x the hard drive space (one to download, one to decompress, ans one for temp files) to make it patch like on PlayStation, where you also cant play
while its downloading. Most people prefer the Xbox system

You need to play the game while connected to Xbox Live, it will then download a patch which will allow you to play the game. After downloading this patch you can disconnect from Xbox Live and you will still be able to play.

@ Mexi. PS4 is nothing like 3 where patches are concerned. You can play the game while it's patch downloads and installs in the background.

You should also try installing while the console is disconnected from live. If the game has a patch it will download while the game is installing. This will rule out a problem with the patch download.

If you still can't fix it after getting a new disc or installing offline then you should contact support as your console might be faulty
