Can’t play disc games because of Xbox Game Pass trial?

If it's not letting you play the games, then a reinstall is probably the best option. Uninstall the games first, then install from disc. Hopefully that should fix the issue.

Sometimes the game might show as Trial in the Store because you got the trial from the store but then bought the disc. Is your son able to pass level 7 in Destiny? If yes, then the game is not in trial mode anymore.

You won't have any problems once your game pass trial expires, just be sure to have the disc in the console when you want to play, and while you have game pass, you don't need to put the disc in the console to play, since you can play it digitally via
game pass.

You'll still see the option to purchase Xbox Game Pass because as you mentioned you're using a trial and not a paid subscription. The most important thing is whether or not you can access Xbox Game Pass games as part of your trial.

When you go to My Games & Apps>Memberships>Xbox Game Pass, are you able to launch the Game Pass menus and install/play Game Pass titles?
