Can't play digital purchase game

I purchased the Red Dead Redemption 2 Story Mode via the Microsoft Store last month. All was well until I got back from holiday and updated my console last night. I could no longer play the game, getting error 0x82d40007 instead. To clarify, the account I am trying to play it on is the account I purchased it with, the Xbox is set as my home Xbox, and I have not shared it with anyone.

I have tried restarting the Xbox, pulling all the cords out and reconnecting everything, removing my account from the Xbox and adding it again, I have tried the Xbox troubleshooter, I have tried the virtual assistance agent. I have spent several hours trying to talk to someone from Microsoft both last night and today to no avail. Yes, the game is showing in my purchase history. Finally I tried factory resetting the Xbox. It still will won't play, but instead of the aforementioned error code, it is asking me whether I own the game or not and giving me another error code 0x803f8001

I am beyond frustrated and have spent countless hours trying to fix this thing. The fact that it is impossible to get in touch with anyone from Microsoft about this either is absolutely infuriating.

I have the same exact issue with a game purchased 2 years ago (RDR2). All troubleshooting tips and tricks tried and failed. I can see the game in order history on the Xbox app on my phone but not when I look in my console (only gives option to view last
3 months).

This issue only happened after I was required to accept updated MS privacy policies. This is super annoying and frustrating that I cant even open a ticket with support - only gives FAQs, bot step-by-step of unhelpful troubleshooting, and referral here. Hope
one of you brilliant people have an answer!

This has indeed solved the problem, and is something I would never have thought to do. It's a bit disappointing that they make you pay more money to access the main game which has already been paid for. No doubt a peculiarity of the games two modes being split for game pass.

The game developer requires you to have the online version of the game to play story mode. When the game's online mode exited the game pass this problem started to occur. You can buy online mode for $9.99 with Gold in the store

You would have to purchase the game as a digital copy in order to play it digitally. You can't download a digital copy because you lost your disc.

I see. Unfortunately, game disc can't be used on your console. It cannot be transferred digitally to your account. You must purchase the game digitally in order to play it.
