    Can't...Play...ANYTHING!!!

I've had my 360 for about 18 months now and since November it's been having trouble reading games. At first I'd get an "Open Tray" message once or twice before it read a game. Now it's progressed to the point where it won't read any games at all. I keep
my discs clean, so I know that isn't the problem. Neither is the hard drive. Clearing the cache worked temporarily, but now even that isn't helping anymore. My only thought may be that the disc tray (and most likely some other areas of the console) is just
dusty (and that may actually be more of a hope than a thought).

And here I was thinking the RRoD was the only thing I'd ever have to worry about. Boy, was I wrong...

Now I know all consoles don't last forever, but for one to last 18 months is just pathetic. Why is it that the Xbox's, no matter which generation, always seems to be the least reliable console? And it's not just the Xbox's either, *** near EVERYTHING made
by Microsoft is unreliable as hell.

Since the warranty's out, and I don't play games online so any console ban I might get for it won't affect me too much, I feel the best option for me is to try and fix the thing myself. This might be frowned upon by Microsoft, but answer this: Why the ***
should I fork over a hundred-some-odd dollars for them to fix it, only for it to last only slightly longer, or even less than before?! I don't see the logic in constantly having to put more money in Microsoft's pocket because they can't get their *** together
and make a console reliable enough to get at least 5-7 good years out of it. Is that too much to ask for? I sure hope not because no matter which way you slice it, having a console consistently crap out on you in 2 years or less is inexcusable.

In fact, that's the ONLY reason they don't want us fixing our own consoles: MONEY. They know how unreliable their *** is, no matter how much we try to take care of them, so they try to be cheap bastards and use methods to prevent us from fixing it ourselves,
cause it means less $ for them. Well guess what, Microsoft? You've been exposed! And I DARE ANYONE to say otherwise. I'll call "***!" on you in less than a second.

Note that I have not tried to open it yet, nor am I asking for any self-repair tips. I try to follow the rules, but it's blatantly obvious these rules are clearly there for Microsoft to cheat us out of our money, and I won't stand for it. Bottom line is
this: Microsoft, I've been loyal to you guys, whether it be gaming consoles or computers, for 9 years. However, that loyalty is now on thin ice. Make your stuff more reliable and stop cheating people out of their hard-earned cash or you're never getting another
    dime out of me again.

    :)

    Can't do anything

thanks mister for the response but that did not resolve the issue. I can't go into my settings. It kicked me back to my main screen. When I got to the setting tab after hitting the Xbox button on my control it says "connect to xboxlive" after restart console

  3. Can't purchase anything

Recently, every single time I try to purchase something from an in-game store the billing screen starts to load but never pops up. Any suggestions?

The solution to your problem is simple: it's either dusty, the laser is messed up, or it's too cold where you are. For dustiness, get a CleanDR Laser Lens Cleaner. Same if it's just the laser. If it's too cold, I suggest warming up a towel through a clothes
dryer, and wrapping the Xbox (all cables unhooked, of course) in the warmed up towel for a period of time. I also recommend checking to see if your console is elevated correctly. An off-balanced console can mean bad for the disc-tray. These solutions worked
for me. Also, the support forums is not a ranting place. Save that for forums where it's welcomed. I've had my console for 10 years, and it still works fine. Same with every Microsoft product I own. Keep in mind: Just because it happened to you, doesn't mean
it happened to everybody else. Microsoft isn't that greedy. They already have enough money as it is. Also, f you're not asking for self-repair tips, then why are you here? The point of posting on these forums is to get help on fixing a problem; not ranting.
It's called the Support forum for a reason.

Too cold? Never thought of that one, but since I'm at college right now in the Poconos, it makes some sense, but it also doesn't, since my room is fairly heated. Not too sure what you mean by whether or not it's well-elevated.

Also, I'm here because clearly I did have a problem. Clearly that problem was that my console wasn't reading any discs.

I didn't ask for any self repair tips because 1: I've got a sneaking suspicion that I wouldn't get any help with that here, and 2: I'm still debating whether I should go through with doing the self-repair. I mean, even if I got the tips from somewhere on
the internet I'd probably have still no idea what the hell I'd be doing, and there's still even a chance that a repair might not even be needed. On the flip side, my warranty's already expired, I don't play online, and I'll be damned if I put more $ in Microsoft's
pocket to let them fix it, so what do I have to lose?

You managed to still have the same console for 10 years? B.S.! I don't buy it for a second. That's either dumb luck, or there's something you're not telling me. This crap hasn't just happened to me, it's happened to thousands, hell, possibly even millions
of Xbox users. It doesn't matter if it happens to EVERYONE, what matters is that it happens to the MAJORITY. So you can keep drinking Microsoft's Kool-Aid and believe the lies they spew out, but the evidence against them speaks for itself.

And as far as the ranting goes, I'm just gonna say this: NO. I've tried the calm and cordial approach too many times on forums like this before, and I got flat out ignored. So the way I see it, ranting is the only way for me to get my point across and get
people to listen. That and right now I do have a legit beef with Microsoft, so I have a genuine reason to rant and I'm not just doing this for the hell of it. I want to give them a piece of my mind! And lastly, I don't like to call it "ranting", I prefer to
call it "Letting out 9 years of pent-up frustration at both Xbox and Microsoft", and it feels GOOD.

Sorry to hear that you're having issues with the console. It is possible that the laser is just dying. Playing a lot of disc based games without installing them to the hard drive could cause wear and tear on the drive and make it die out faster than normal.

I would recommend against self repair of the console as that voids the warranty (I know it's already out but it needs to be said) and could result in the console being banned from Live entirely (the PET have ways they can tell through pings).

You could check on sending the console in for repairs (that would cost you) or perhaps look into getting a newer console with a new warranty.

Sorry we couldn't help any further.

PS. I just wanted to mention that my very first 360 console lasted me almost 8 years with only needing to be sent in once while still in warranty. Just luck of the draw on that one, I guess.

Just one thing though. I don't use Live, so any ban I'd get from that won't affect me in any way. Still, I'm starting to steer away from the self repair idea because of the aforementioned reasons, plus a new one: I've got a feeling that even if I was able
to properly replace the dying laser with a new one (Which I'm assuming would be all I'd have to do if I went through with it), I have a feeling that Microsoft coded every interior component to only work with one specific console (which if true, goes to further
prove my point on Microsoft being cheap and greedy), rendering the repair pointless. Regardless of whether I do the repair or not, I've already decided that sending it to Microsoft isn't an option, 'cause even if I don't open it, they might just take my money
and refuse to fix it for me out of spite for me calling them out on all their unethical crap if I do. And even if they do fix it, it'll probably just crap out around the same time as it did before. Either way I just don't trust them with it. This thing's either
getting fixed by itself or it's going in the dump, probably the latter since I've only got 2 weeks until spring break, where I'll have the time needed to get a new one.

    Can't...Play...ANYTHING!!!

UPDATE: I bought a new 360 over spring break from GameStop. I even made sure this time to get the 2 year warranty rather that the standard 1 year. Still, I'm not the least bit happy about all of this, since this seems like it'll be a recurring theme. So
I'll stick with the 360, but when the time comes that I decide to upgrade to the next gen consoles, am I going to choose the Xbox One over the PS4? The answer to that is not just a "NO", it's a "OH, HELL NO!". From here on out, or at least until Microsoft
gets its head out of its *** and makes consoles that are more reliable, my loyalty will be with Sony. At least they can make their consoles reliable (or at the very least more reliable than Microsoft can. The test of time proves it. PS2 vs. Xbox. PS2 was more
reliable. PS3 vs. 360. PS3 is WAAAY more reliable.).

    I can't play anything

Hi, I hope you're doing great out there. I am an Independent advisor and I am here to help you in regard to your concern.

I have here steps that we can try, please perform a power cycle on your console by following the steps below:

    "POWERCYCLE CONSOLE

    1. Turn off your console by holding the Xbox button on the front of the console for approximately 10 seconds. The console will turn off.

    2. Turn your console back on by pressing the Xbox button on the console or the Xbox button on your controller. "

If that didn't work resetting the console keeping games and apps will be the next option. Don't worry because as long as you're connected to Xbox Live your saved progress, games, will not be deleted. It will remove all of your accounts but you can add all of them later on.

"Press the Xbox button to open the guide.

Select Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info.

    Select Reset console.

Reset and keep my games & apps."
