    Can't install games to external sd card anymore


    I'll make this as clear as possible.

    >I have Game Pass Ultimate

    >I had previously installed Age of empires 2 DE and Halo MCC to my external sd card (im on a surface book 2)

    >everything was fine until i wanted to get the last patch for AOE2 DE

    >Saw it wasnt getting downloaded and i got error 0x8007177E

    >I clicked the X to cancel and got this:

    >I thought "huh this sucks but i guess i'll redownload everything as long as i get the latest version of the game" and clicked "YES, cancel anyway"

    >tried to dl the AOE2 DE game again and got the same error from above, it gets stuck on "error".

    >formatted sd card, lost both games, and now i cant even install Halo MCC, (i still get an error message but a different error code (a different error code on Halo than the one on AOE2) on it: 0x803FB107 )

    I did a lot of troubleshooting, did a reset on ms store, flushed all the temp folders, did the powershell thingy to restore MS store, tried hiding ms services, paused my avast antivirus, i did almost everything from here except the last steps:

    My laptop is up to date on windows updates. I'm totally lost and dont want to have to do a clean windows install just to fix this issue cause i have a lot of software installed in it. It sucks that MS is giving me trouble when i paid for XGP U so looks like
    if nothing works i will eventually have to pay for these games on steam and hope it works.

    I already formatted the sd card several times so it works correctly. It creates the old folder structure of the games but it downloads nothing.

    When I try to install them to C: i think it works but not on D: anymore which wasnt a problem before. I also tried downloading from the xbox beta pc app and same issues and error codes.

    Also something I find weird is that when i click the windows menu bar icon and see all the programs installed, AOE 2 is still displayed even though its not installed anymore and every trace of it should be gone since it was on the D: sd card and its gone
    on MS store too.

    ok i fixed it doing this which i found elsewhere:

    Hi,

    had the same error but got it fixed by activating file encryption on NTFS volumes in gpedit cause i found that the error code information is: "volume_not_support_efs" means "the disk partition does not support
    file encryption"

    So, try:

    1. "Windows Button" + "R"

    2. type in "gpedit.msc" and hit "enter"

    3. in gpedit go to "Computer Configuration" > "Administrative Templates" > "System" > "Filesystem" > "NTFS"

    4. check if "Do not allow encryption an all NTFS volumes" is activated, if so then double click it and set it to "not configured"

    5. Restart PC and try to install games

    And if you're trying to install to another drive instead of C: you have to change storage destination for apps.

    Navigate to "settings" > "system" > "storage" > scroll down to "change where new content is saved" > change "new apps will save to:" to your new destination and restart PC.

    Do you have an external SD card? If so, can you try installing the app/game onto the other storage device (if you've been trying to install to SD, install to internal; if internal so far, try SD card)? Let us know how you get on.
