Can’t Install From Web Store Xbox Series X

Your drive will work the same on Series X as it does on Xbox One and you won't need to format it.

However, Series X games or Xbox One games with Series X enhancements will not run from that drive and will either need to be installed internally or to an external SSD designed for Series X/S.

Your hard drive will be too slow for Series X games. They can be stored there, but not run from there.

From what I can tell, to access the Series X version of the game, you need the Cross-Gen bundle...once you buy that, you should then be able to download and install the Series X version. Without the cross-gen bundle it will, presumably, just install the XB1 version

I have multiple games too I purchased using points years ago that show I don’t own them on Series X or the web store. All of them show in my download history on my 360 though. I even redownloaded them on the 360 and launched them. They all still show up as unowned on Series X and the web store.

You should try installing from the web browser, first look for the game here

Then press in the picture of the game and you will be redirected to Xbox web store, there log with the same account, press on the install to button, select your console

I bought call of duty cold war on my xbox one x and then got a xbox series s and it says I can download it but when it downloads it says I need to buy it please help

I understand, can you try searching for the Xbox Series X version of the game instead using the console's store section? Let's see if we can install the game from there.
