Can't get Xbox One S to see all media on 4TB USB HDDs

I'm trying to set Kodi up on my Xbox One S and can't seem to make the Xbox play nicely with my USB hard drives. I have a 4TB USB HDD that is 90% full of media. I plugged it into the Xbox and had Kodi scan it and all seemed fine, until I realized
that for some reason, the most recent files I put on it wouldn't open, Kodi would do nothing if I tried to the load them and VLC player kicked back a "no path to file" error. On PC everything is fine.

I figured this was as good an excuse as any to back everything up to a new drive and rule it out as a failure. So I picked up a new 4TB drive and oddly enough, it's doing the same thing. It's like the Xbox can't actually use the entire 4TB, the last
1/4 of the files I put on the drive either don't load on Xbox, or don't show up at all, but are fine on PC. It isn't a Kodi problem because VLC player and the Xbox file browser are the same.

For example, I've copied a folder with over 100+ GB of files in it to the USB HDD. On my PC, it appears fine and I can load the media. On my Xbox, the folder is empty. I have another folder with over three hundred files, but the Xbox only sees half.

Weirdly enough, I can fix individual files by plugging the drive into my computer, copying them (not moving) to a different location on the same drive, and then deleting the original and moving the copy to the original location. Then, for some reason,
the Xbox will like them? It's the same on both drives and I'm stumped. The drives are different, one's a WD and the other is a Seagate, both formatted to NTFS and both are USB 3.0. It's like the Xbox has problems with certain physical storage locations on
    the drives.

Am I missing something obvious? Thanks

    :)

Yeah I tried both the front and the back with the same results. I even tried getting an external powered USB hub to make sure they were getting enough power, with no change.

I haven't talked to either WD or Seagate since it seemed odd that they would have identical problems.

The new drive worked fine until I loaded more than 3TB on it, now it has the same problems the other drive did, with files added past that either not appearing, or if they do, being unable to be opened. I'm so confused.

    Hello Undaunting,

Thank you for posting on the Xbox forums. Are the applications that you are trying to utilize updated? The console may have an issue with automatically updating your applications since they are on an external hard drive. We recommend

making sure the console is up to date
. Once we have determined that the console is up to date, we recommend removing the applications from the external hard drive. Afterwards, copy the application files from the internal hard drive of the console to the
external hard drive. Be sure to let us know the results!

Thanks for the reply! Have you tested the drives out using different USB ports on the Xbox to see if it makes a difference? Have you attempted to contact the manufacturers of the different external hard drives to see if they've experienced similar compatibility
    issues before with their products?

It isn't for applications, I'm using it for media files (mainly music and videos). All of my applications are stored on the internal Xbox HDD.

Seagate 4TB Expansion Desktop Hard Drive

I personally run the Seagate 4Tb USB 3 HDD (mobile, not wall powered) on my Xbox One S. Runs fine and fast, games load faster than from the internal HDD. Had it running daily for over a year now. Definitely a good choice.
