Can't get past 1st setup page

Hi, whilst setting up an xbox one for a friend, I couldn't get past the very first connect controller page with the big image of a controller with the flashing white x.

The controller is synced and i've tried it with another, they both sync wirelessly and with an attached usb, but the image stays the same on screen, and sometimes zooms in to the 'B' button on screen and then back to a full size controller image!

I've tried rebooting with or without a cable, with the controller on or off on reboot, tried a hard reboot, everything but i can't get past the first screen.

It's an xbox elite console but i'm trying to set up using a plain xbox one controller. Does it need the original controller, I assume this would make no difference?

Any ideas anyone? Cheers.

Can't get past birthday in initial setup

I tried setting up my Xbox One last night, but after entering my user and password I'm asked to enter my birthday.

The problem is that there are 3 boxes for day, month and year, and all 3 requires me to select from a list, but I'm only able to write and therefore I'm also not able to switch between the boxes, so it is stuck on the day box.

I've read somewhere that it shouldn't ask if my profile already has a birthday, so I checked and I only entered year, I've updated it and will see if that does the trick.

My main reason for posting this is to help someone with the same issue and hopefully make MS take note of it so they can patch it as this can't be what they've intended.

 

It wouldnt matter which controller as long as it is a One controller.

I had a similar situation with one of mine and had to just take it back and exchange it.

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. We recommend attempting a soft factory reset. This is the type of reset that keeps games and applications installed. If the console is brand new, you can choose to do a full factory reset. We will list
the steps on how to complete a factory reset without being able to access the settings menu. Be sure to let us know the results!

1. Power off your console, and then unplug the power cord to ensure that the console is completely powered off.
   
2. Wait 30 seconds, then plug the power cord back in.
3. Press and hold the BIND button (located on the left side of the console) and the
   EJECT button (located on the front of the console), and then press the
   Xbox button on the console.
4. Continue holding the BIND and EJECT buttons for 10-15 seconds.
   
5. Listen for two “power-up” tones a couple of seconds apart. You can release the
   BIND and EJECT buttons after the second power-up tone.
   
6. The console should power up and take you directly to the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter.
   

To reset your console from the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter, use the D-pad and
A button on your controller to select Reset this Xbox. When prompted, select
Keep My Games & Apps.
