Can't get External Drives to work properly

I've tried installing two separate external hard drives, a 500 GB and a 1tb. They both are recognized and are usable, but for whatever reason when I run games off of them the games load very slow and even go so far as to freeze for about a full minute before
resuming. Yes, I have hard booted it a few times. Any thoughts?

Internal / External Hard Drives

The internal 4gb hard drive is not working properly. If i get an external hard drive, would that bypass the internal hard drive and work properly, or would i still need to have the internal hard drive repaired

Some games out there require the xbox hard drive in order to work properly. Why not just buy the hard drive for it instead of something external.

 

Are they USB 3.0 drives? What brand are they? Some people have stated that they have trouble with Seagate drives.

 

Yeah, they're both USB 3.0. One was Seagate and one was Toshiba.

 

Like I said, the Xbox recognizes them, the console formats them, I can store games on them, but everything loads so slowly.

 

Have you formatted them properly before moving your games onto them? Are they external, or portable drives (do they have their own power source)?

 

I formatted them on the system and the system said they were ready. They're externals, and the only thing I can think of is that the cable connecting the drive to the system is faulty.

 

It could also be a faulty usb on the xbox itself. Have you tried them in a different port?

 

Yep, I tried the two ports on the back as well, same results.
