    Can't Get External Drive Working

I'm about out of space on my Xbox One, so purchased a 5TB USB 3.0 Seagate "Expansion" drive from Newegg (which I got a pretty good deal on). I found a video on YouTube of some guy unboxing and attaching the exact same drive on his Xbox One. He had no problems
with it, and it came right up and asked if he wanted to format right after he hooked it up. Mine hasn't worked like that, unfortunately. I have ZERO problems with this drive and it works fine when it's connected to my PC. Was wondering if anyone has any
ideas on what I can do to get it working.

    The video is here:

Here's what I've done so far:

    • At initial connection it recognized the drive, but did not ask to format it. When I went in to manage storage it showed as "Pictures, music, & video." There was no option available to format it. All I could do was browse the drive.
    • I've done a "full reboot" of the console (more than once) by holding the power button for 10 seconds. This had no effect on anything.
    • I found information that suggested the drive must be formatted as FAT32 (drive was formatted as NTFS out of the box), so I connected the drive to my PC and reformatted as FAT32. Reconnected to Xbox One, went to manage storage, and had an option to format
the drive. Went through all the prompts and told it to format the drive and install new things on the drive. Nothing happened (disk activity light did not blink) and it stayed as "Pictures, music, & video."
    • Found something else that said it should be NTFS. Connected to PC and reformatted as NTFS. Reconnected to Xbox, went through all the steps to format drive and use for games. As above, nothing happened again.
    • Found information that said to connect to PC, delete all partitions, create a new partition, but don't format it on the PC and allow the Xbox One to format it. Deleted partition while connected to PC, recreated partition but did not format, connected back
up to Xbox One. Xbox saw the drive, but did not prompt to format it. Went in to manage storage and it's showing as "Pictures, music, & video" with only a browse option available - no option available to format it.
    • I've tried plugging the drive into different USB ports on the Xbox One, which had no effect on the situation.
As stated above, the drive works fine and I have zero problems with it on my PC. It's only on my Xbox One that it's not working properly.

    :)

External harddrive for media not recognised by Xbox one

My external hard drive has been having issues since the new dashboard update. Now I have to turn on the Xbox two to three times to get it to recognize it. Also, yesterday, it wouldn't let me download a game to the external hard drive. I was able to download
it to the internal hard drive but only when the external wasn't recognized. For some strange reason, now when the external hard drive is working, I can't reset the console, I have to turn it completely off. Pressing the reboot option causes the Xbox to sit
with a black screen and never reboots.

    Can't Get External Drive Working

It sounds to me that the drive is only being recognized as a USB 2.0 drive. That would explain why it had no option to format and was being seen as "pictures, music, & video" on the One.

    -

Are you sure you got a USB 3.0 drive? I'd try to make sure that it is showing as a USB 3.0 drive on the PC since it sounds like either the drive isn't a 3.0 drive, the drive has a faulty controller that is only registering at 2.0 speed, or there is something
    amiss with your Xbox One.

    -

The other thing to check is that your cable is rated for USB 3.0. This could very likely be the problem.

The box and all the documentation say it's a USB 3.0 drive. The option to format does come up occasionally on the Xbox, but when I select that and go through all the prompts it doesn't format it. I don't have any machines with a USB 3.0 port on them other
than my Xbox, so connecting it to my PC wouldn't tell me if it's USB 3.0 or not. I did read somewhere (after posting my original message) that the cable supplied with the drive is complete crap, and replacing the cable helps a number of issues - so I've ordered
another cable that has good ratings from Amazon to try. It's supposed to be here on Monday.

The cable that came with the drive appears to have been the problem! The new cable actually came today instead of Monday (since when did the post office start delivering on Sundays??). It was definitely a much higher quality cable than the one that came
with the drive. I swapped out the cable, the drive came right up on my Xbox One, the option to format the drive was there, and it actually formatted the drive this time. It's now showing as a "Games & apps" drive. Hope this helps someone else that might
be having external drive issues! The new cable didn't cost much - $5 and some change.

Is it one of those cables with funky end that looks like two mini USB connectors side by side on the end that plugs into the hard drive? I'm having the exact same issue with a new external hard drive and think that it may be the cable, but I want to make
sure that I pick up one that works.

Do you remember the make and model of the cable you bought?

    Thanks.

  10. Thanks. I actually went with a different cable before I saw your response, but the update tonight fixed the problem.

What drive are you storing it on internal or external hdd ? If external it can't be usrd

If external series storage card then that works

You gotta remember the fps update needs a xbox storage unjt

Yeah it doesn't always work. Thankfully games already load fast. I'm sure it will get better.

Remember though, it only works on games that are installed internally or on an Expansion card. USB external drives can't use it.

Metal Gear Solid 5 and how to play it?

Any games that requires and Xbox hard drive, requires it because of system files on those drives. You can't get around it with any type of external drive.

    External hdd

Not sure why you would want to do that but you can't just remove the internal drive and put another drive in an expect the console to work. Personally, I would suggest getting a larger external HDD and put all the games on it and leave the internal drive
as is just for the files used by the system. That is how I have mine set up. I have an 8TB external drive with all my games on it and no games are on the internal drive and it works great.

As mentioned previously, open the console is against the ToS and could result in suspensions/bans for tampering.
