  1. Can't format external drive for games and apps

I'm about to tear my hair out. I have a 2TB Fantom drive that has usb 3.0 and nothing on the drive whatsoever, so there's plenty of space. It meets Xbox One's requirements of what type of drive you can use for apps and games. I've tried formatting via xbox
one settings and it only gives me an option for "help" and "view contents". There is nowhere I can find to format the drive for games and apps on the Xbox One dashboard and settings, it only recognizes the drive as media storage.

I've tried formatting the drive from a Windows 7 and Windows 10 machine, using both exFAT and NTFS with no success. I've tried partitioning the drive and everything I could think of. I've done a bunch of searching online and I can't find a solution. I'm
about to throw this thing through my window. Any help would be appreciated before I go postal and break stuff. Thanks in advance!

    :)

format external hard drive for game use on xbox one S

I'm trying to format my external hard drive, my Xbox only gives me the option to format for games and apps or media but when I go to format it, it doesn't do anything and the only way for my Xbox to give me the option to format for game use is for my external
to be formatted in FAT32 please help and thanks in advance.

Also someone said he fixed his problem using these steps ...If you’re currently in Instant-On mode, follow these steps to adjust the power management for storage:

Scroll left from Home to open the guide.

    Select Settings.

    Select All settings.

    Select Power.

    Go to Power mode.

Unselect the checkbox next to “When Xbox is off, turn off storage.”

  7. Thanks for the help. I did that and it still showed the drive as a media storage, even after restarting the drive and the Xbox. So I tried erasing and formatting from my Mac as exFAT32, and I was able to get to "format for games and apps" but when I follow
the steps, nothing happens. It doesn't format. The drive still has the music note and says "External, 1.8TB free of 1.8TB, Pictures, Music and Video." Any other ideas?

Can't format external drive for games and apps

I did a bit of digging and found a previous thread wonder if it might help you.

Steps to solve external hard drive issues for use with games and apps:

    1) Format the drive to NTFS to get the Xbox One to recognize it as a media device.

Plug the drive into your PC

Press the Windows Key + E to bring up Windows Explorer

Find the drive in the sidebar on the left, right click on it and select "Format..."

Format the drive. NTFS is the only important thing; default settings should be fine.

This may take awhile. Disconnect the drive when the format completes

    2) Format the drive to work with Xbox One games and apps.

Turn on your Xbox One, press the Menu button on your controller and navigate to the Settings page

Navigate to System, then Manage Storage

Plug in the external hard drive, it should appear to the right of Internal storage. If it does not, verify it fulfills the listed requirements on the Storage page

Highlight the drive, select it with the A button (or voice or gesture), and then select Format [drive for Xbox One games and apps]

Almost instantly it should be formatted and you're good to go!

  10. Darren, thanks for your help and patience. I followed all the instructions to a T, and when the drive appears, it won't give me an option to format when I press the A button. It just gives me the option to view contents. IT's USB 3.0, 1.8TB free and I'm
back to the same issue as originally. The only way I could get the drive to show "format for apps and games" is when I formatted the drive through my Mac to exFAT32. As mentioned, it doesn't show that it formats and still shows the drive as a media storage
device. I did read something about not using a Fantom drive with Xbox One, so I'm thinking of returning the drive and trying a WD drive. Don't know what else to do at this point. The NTFS formatting isn't working.

  11. I tried the Xbox 360 format previously, but I tried it again just now. It formats fine but then won't mount on the Xbox One at all.

Thanks anyway! That last suggestion gave the same results as the exFAT32. It gives me the option to format but doesn't end up formatting it at all. Still shows as media storage. I'm officially giving up! Thanks again for your help and time.

One last thing if you click the start button when it has a music note symbol and the 'help' and 'switch profile' option comes up, Have you tried hitting the A button instead?

I'm guessing you have already tried that?

the Drive may not be capable to work with the console as Darren did run you through a lot of steps that should've fixed the issue.

Lets power cycle the console hold the power button on the console for 8 seconds until it powers down unplug it from receiving power and sending HDMI (Please also remove the drive as well) signals wait an additional 5 minutes then plug it back in as well
as the drive with and test it out.
