Xbox 360 Controller Won't Connect To PC

Hello My Xbox 360 controller won't connect to my pc and I want to edit the controls to where I can play but I can't figure out how. I have all the required things hooked up all I need is for it to work for my pc. when

Connect Xbox 360 to Surface Book??

This is probably a really dumb question and I should probably know the answer butttttttttt....

How do I connect my Xbox 360 to my Surface Book? I didn't buy a TV for my dorm cause I figured I could stream my 360 on my surface book but I can't figure out how and so far google has not helped at all. This is my first windows laptop so I'm still trying
to figure things out, any help would be great! Thanks!!

To make sure, are you using an official wired Xbox 360 controller or do you have the official Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows? Unfortunately if you're using a Play & Charge kit it wouldn't allow you to connect it to your PC.

You have to be in the same network is the key things. If you are in the same network then open the Xbox companion app and search for it; should show right up.

If it does not show up when you search you are likely in two different networks. This can happen in a home setup if you use a mesh device and have something connected direct to the router with a network cable.
