Can’t download update because of space; can’t sign into Xbox Live to make space

Hi,

When I sign onto Xbox I receive an “Update required” prompt that reads “A system update is available from Xbox Live. If you decline you won’t be able to connect to Xbox Live until you take the update. Visit Xbox.com/update for more info. Do you want to
apply the update now?”

When I click yes I get a pop up that says “System Update” that states “You don’t have enough storage space to take this update. Please connect an Xbox 360 storage device with at least 190 MB free space.”

I have two options: Try Again and Cancel. If I hit Try Again I get the same System Update message. If I hit cancel I do not get to sign into Xbox Live.

When I go to test my connection the first two parameters are connected (Network, Internet) but for Xbox Live I receive an error titled “Test Failed” and it has me go through useless suggestions.

Basically I want to be able to sign into Xbox Live so I can clear space for the update. Is this possible?

Does this mean I can’t play live or I can’t play at all?

Banned. But why?

I’ve tried going to the enforcement page but can’t sign in to see why I was banned. Also has all my money I paid for digital downloads been stolen? Because if I can’t sign in then I can’t use the content that I paid for. In my book that’s theft no matter
how you split it.

Hi there,

this could be caused by a failing storage device. Please try removing and reinserting the Xbox 360 'external' hard drive (if present) when the console is powered off to see if that helps

Also check if you can see the storage device itself via Settings - System - Storage, if you can't see your storage device then it's most likely a failure on that and may need replacing.

If all steps fail on that link then the only option left would be to contact Xbox Support, to see what they advise. This might be a repair (if available) for the console.

Hi paulbearon,

I had the same issue. My solution was to put a USB into the USB slot making sure the USB was big enough, format the USB to enable it to be used by the Xbox360, and reboot the Xbox. The system then recognised the USB and downloaded the update on to that.
That enables me to login to Live and clear some space on my HDD.

Storage is storage. You know the engine is essential space. The back seat is space that’s there that can’t be used and can be seen. So I guess it’s a bad an example because I still haven’t had anyone tell me why almost a 3rd is being used and I can’t SEE it. Like on an iPhone, you can see your storage and mostly what it’s being used for. So I’m just supposed to believe that all of that space is for updates and files. What files? I don’t know, I can’t see it. Even on a pc you can see what’s in your storage.

Thanks for reply. We already did number 2 first and number 1 after that, before your reply. The games won’t download. The Xbox is not recognising an external drive that is 100% full. Could this be linked? If so how do we make space available as we can’t see it.

I like that they added a barrel which takes up less space than two chest i like the campfire makes it easy for when you can’t get to furnace
