I have an Asus MG278Q monitor. My Series X gives me 1440p or 120hz options, but won't run them at the same time. Xbox says it isn't supported. The monitor is indeed capable of 1440 / 120hz via HDMI 2.0, according to the manual. It works on PC.

I've seen lists of monitors that have apparently been OK'd by MS, mine is usually on those lists.

Any thoughts, please? Disappointing that MS don't have anything out there on this subject, looks like a lot of people having similar issues.

    :)

Haha yes I checked the port, I had fallen foul of that before :)

I'll give the EDID override a go and see if that helps.

Yes the firmware was something I raised in my ASUS email. Probably won't hear from them until next week.

    Hi,

Interesting. Nice to see Asus showing compatibility tables for their monitors now.

I'm assuming you've definitely plugged your console into this monitors HDMI 2.0 connector which is located to the left of the DP port? This monitor also has an an HDMI 1.4 port which won't do 1440P @120.

As you probably already know, EDID is a way for the monitor to tell the input device be that a console or PC what it's capabilities are. It should 'just work' but there is an option on the console to override EDID in the display settings screen. Give this a try.

When I looked at reviews for this monitor it shows 2015, perhaps it needs a firmware update?

Thanks for your reply. Yes I knew about the timings etc, and it does indeed work at 1080p / 120 and 1440p / 60 with HDMI 2.0 on the SX. My point with it working on the PC was that it wasn't a broken monitor :)

Can't find the original page for monitor compatibility, but here is the ASUS FAQ version for both Xbox and PS5:

    https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1045097/

The MG278Q is listed in the 1440/120 section in that table.

It is also advertised on the monitor page:

    https://www.asus.com/Displays-Desktops/Monitors/Eye-Care/MG278Q/

    "Full HD(1920 X 1080)@120Hz output on PS5; Full HD &1440P(2560 x 1440)@120Hz VRR output on Xbox Series X/S"

I've reached out to ASUS tech support as well. I had read that it may be to do with the EDID not containing all the info the Xbox needs, that'll be something for ASUS to answer I think.

    Hi,

Where is this list of monitors that have been 'Ok'd by MS'? Not that I don't believe you it's just that I haven't seen such a list, certainly not an official one.

The issue is one of 'timings'. A display maybe sold as 120Hz, but this refresh rate isn't exact, and Xbox consoles can be really picky when it comes to timings. For example if Series X (or S) is looking for a refresh of 119.98, but your screen actually refreshes at 119.88 then 120Hz will be unavailable for use.

The Xbox uses the VESA standard for refresh rates, if your display doesn't conform to this standard then high refresh and 1440P may not be possible.

To be clear, I'm not sure what the exact refresh of the MG278Q is, the above was an example for reference. The 144Hz rating is only available on a PC connected via Display Port.

It works at 120Hz on PC because PC graphics cards don't have to conform to VESA display standards. You'll probably get 120Hz all day on a PC but not so on a console. The manual won't explain this as generally speaking monitors are usually targeted and sold towards PC users. It's only at the launch of the latest generation that console users are picking monitors as their primary displays.

It's likely that 120Hz mode works at 1080P mode, so give that a try.
