Can't copy game from DVD to HDD

Got a brand new 360 E with 500GB internal disk. I was hoping to be able to copy my games on DVD to the internal HDD. No luck so far. Found some instruction videos on Youtube but my Dashboard is different. I simply don't have the Install menu mentioned in
the video and on the Xbox Support pages. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

You can't move DVD-installed games between storage devices, let alone consoles. Games installed from DVD are locked to the storage device and console they're installed on.

Nothing stops you from downloading your content to each console's HDD. It will only work offline for the first console that downloads each piece of DLC, but that's the same state you're in now. If you really don't want to download it twice, use a transfer
cable to copy the content from one HDD to another via System Settings, Memory.

Install all games before playing. That saves wear and tear on the DVD drive by spinning the DVD drive down after initiall copy protection checks.

When you put the game in the tray can you try highlighting the game then press X to get into the install menu. You should be able to install from there.

Thanks for trying to help. Unfortunately, it doesn't resolve my issue. When I press X after highlighting the game I get to a screen with two menu items in the top line: Overview and Achievements. Under Overview, where I believe I should have the Install
tile, I only have Play Now and nothing else. Any more ideas maybe? I am completely baffled by this. Cheers.

What game are you trying to install? Some games can't be installed to the hard drive of the console?

I've tried Mindecraft and Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Republic Heroes.

I don't think Minecraft will install but not really sure about the other game. Have you tried logging out then back in to see if it will give you that option?

It is true that Minecraft cannot be installed on to the hard drive. The Star Wars game is an older one as well and more than likely cannot be installed either.

I have briefly revisited this issue. Turns out I missed something when I tried to install SWTCW: Republic Heroes. Contrary to what I thought or said earlier, this game CAN be installed on the hard disk. The method is exactly as described above in this topic.
Insert disk (will autostart), press silver XBOX button, exit to dashboard, press X for Game Details and then select Install. Thanks.

game will not "switch" where it is run from.

I just picked up a copy and yes. it seems to still be reading off of the DVD and not the HDD after install of game.

There's a technical reason: the game is loading from the HDD cache and the DVD at the same time. If the game image were installed to HDD or had been downloaded, trying to read from both areas of the HDD at the same time would cause thrashing and reduce
performance.

Those who were gaming on the 360 when HDD installation was new might remember that Halo 3 needed to
not be installed for the same reason until there was an update.
