  1. Can't Connect to Your DHCP Server

A little background on my situation:

I have Comcast Xfinity as my ISP and my original home network setup used a rented modem/wireless router combo from Comcast and an Linksys router that I had purchased as well as a netgear switch. Our home is wired with Cat5 throughout, so I had the modem
and router hooked up downstairs and ran internet back up to the homerun upstairs where the switch then split it out to every other room in the house. At this point my Xbox One was wired directly out of one of the Cat5 ports and was able to connect without
    issue.

Unfortunately, the Comcast modem/router and my old Linksys router were not doing a very good job of providing a wireless signal to the whole home so I had to make a change. I bought a new Motorola Surfboard SB141 modem and ASUS router and kept the same
switch. I moved the modem upstairs to the homerun and ran the internet directly from the modem to the switch. The router is downstairs and is basically just set up to provide wireless service to the home. Now, when I fire up my Xbox One for a good gaming
session I am getting the "Can't connect to your DHCP server" error. I took our Mac and plugged it in directly to the Ethernet cord going to my Xbox One and the internet is working just fine. I have tried resetting the modem and Xbox and it is still not working.

    Summary:

Old setup: Modem -> Router -> Switch -> Xbox

New Setup: Modem -> Switch -> Xbox (router is now out of the loop of the Xbox and is just running our wireless network)

If the internet is up and working at that port, shouldn't the Xbox be able to recognize it? Do I HAVE to have the router between the modem and the Xbox for the DHCP to assign properly? Are there any suggestions as to what I can do to try and get the Xbox
One to connect to the internet again??

    :)

    Hey there!

Sorry to hear about the issues. We do have a guide for >>connection errors<< that I recommend you take a
peek at. Select the box that involves DHCP errors and follow all the steps provided.

If that doesn't help, do let us know and we'll take another look. Can't Connect to Your DHCP Server :)

The Problem is. The Modem can only give 1 IP adress to 1 Device. The best would be if your router is this device (you have to restart your modem once if you connect). So your Router can handle the DHCP.

maybe your switch is good enough to do so -it will also be possible.

Use your Router for DHCP. - problem solved

  5. Thanks for the feedback Rozilla!

    A quick question:

    1) Why would the internet from that plug work when I hook it up to the my computer, but not work with the Xbox? Does the computer process DHCP differently?

I am going to try and change my configuration tonight to have it set up as:

Modem -> Router -> Switch -> Xbox (and rest of cat5 jacks)

and hopefully that will remedy things. I will stop back and give feedback either way!

    Hey there DeucE DrizzlE!

Sorry to hear about the connection issue. Could you provide us the model of your ASUS router? For now I recommend power cycling your modem. Hold the power button on your Xbox One console for 10 seconds to clear the system cache, and then unplug your modem
for 5 minutes. After the 5 minutes are up, plug the modem back in and power on the Xbox One console.

If the above steps do not help, try our
    Xbox One Connection Troubleshoot
    page for addition troubleshooting steps.

Post back and let us know how it goes, be sure to post back with your routers' model number if the error persists! Can't Connect to Your DHCP Server :)

  7. Thanks for the input Mister Beep!

My ASUS router model is RT-N556U. The switch I am using is a Netgear make, but I am not sure on the model.

I have tried power cycling the modem and followed the steps on the troubleshooter, but am still receiving the DHCP error.

As I mentioned, the Xbox is technically not even connected to the router (which could be part of the problem) with the configuration I currently have set up. It is just very odd to me that I have a good internet signal coming through that cat5 jack, and
it works fine when hooked directly to a computer, but does not work when that same cord is then hooked directly to the Xbox.

Sorry to hear that didn't help. Let's eliminate that switch and have the Xbox One connected directly to your modem. Post back and let us know if the issue persists while plugged into the modem! Can't Connect to Your DHCP Server :)

  9. So I moved the router back in the line of connection and the Xbox connected right away. The switch I have is not capable of operating as a DHCP server.

I believe the computer worked when the Xbox didn't because the one IP address was assigned to the router which then assigned the computer a dynamic IP address via the wireless connection. When I went to use the computer via the wired connection it worked
because it hard already had an IP address assigned.

I wonder if I had hooked the Xbox up via the wireless connection and then went back to the wired connection if it would have worked... Either way, I think the way it is set up now is the best solution because IPs will need to be assigned and reassigned and
I am guessing that would probably start to cause issues with conflicting addressed down the way.

    Thanks for all the input!

    DHCP?!

Because you can't DHCP is the only way you can connect.to the internet

When you get an dhcp error it means it isn't connecting to your router or isp

    Contact your isp for.help

You can't use static ip if you aren't connecting to your router

It is the dhcp server in your router that hands you your ip including static

Your isp.will help you with connection problems

    Can't connect to DHCP server!

Hello I was just wondering if you were ever able to resolve your issue. I’ve been having the same problem for the last week with little to no luck. My situation is slightly different as I was using an alternate MAC address to bypass a splash page to connect to WiFi, it worked fine for months but after a power outage last week it’s been nothing but problems, mainly DHCP server errors.

I’ve managed to get a connection a few times by manually inputting the IP, gateway, DNS etc and changing the MAC address but even following the exact same steps I can never replicate it and get a connection consistently. The ISP has been completely useless. Any advice would be great if you happened to find anything that worked.
