Can't connect to Live - no error code

Well, I've finally exhausted all my troubleshooting repertoire, so here's hoping I can find some helpful advice here! I just got myself an Xbox 360 Slim and it won't connect to Live - no error code, just a 'can't connect - have you tried turning it off and
back on again' (yes I have). The steps before Live in the network test are all green (the Xbox connects to the internet).

I'm living in a student residence in Germany, but every room has its own modem and therefore I'm assuming outside IP - so the ISP is the local university.

Steps I've already taken to troubleshooting:

- Both wireless with my router / wired direct to modem come to the same conclusion (I've performed the appropriate MAC address cloning tricks for the direct connection)

- From the router: port-forwarding, DMZ, checking MTU (not at the same time)

- I've even swapped the older Motorola SB4200 for a newer 5100E model, no difference in outcome

- A complete power cycle...more than once

Xbox Live can't connect?

None, really. Just "can't connect to xbox live". No error codes.

edit: I also do not have the SportsPicks app. The only sports app is ESPN.

 

Microsoft looking into Error Code 0x8004888d

I haven't seen this error yet, but a lot of people aren't able to connect to live. Maybe you are among the people suffering from error code "0x8004888d". It pops up whenever someone tries to sign into their account. So far the news is that Microsoft is working hard to fix the issue. So are you having the problems?

 

When you connect to the internet with a lap top or computer do you have to put in any user name and password on your internet landing page? Or more likely as you are part student residance you could have a Mac filtering issue. I'd speak to your admin for
your student residance for help.

 

I agree with superhugmonkey. You should talk to your schools tech squad and have them help you sort it out.

My internet does indeed involve MAC filtering - the first time you use a computer directly with the modem, you arrive at a landing page. After the modem 'learns' that computer's MAC address (I've seen this page in the modem settings). MAC cloning of that
learned address is how I get the modem to accept the router and is what I've already attempted with the Xbox 360 to no avail.

This wouldn't be an issue behind the router anyway, no? None of the devices behind the router with any random MAC addresses have problems getting to the internet. I'll look into the Xbox MAC cloning a little more closely at any rate and see if I've botched
something somewhere...

 

Figured I should follow-up on this: I finally got a hold of the Internet Tutor here who informed me that the ISP (some practically hidden company I'd never heard of that the Uni contracts out to for only some of the residences) blocked the necessary port,
sort of as expected; I suppose the only reason I didn't jump to that conclusion in the first place is that I figured blocked ports are common-enough to warrant some sort of feedback from the Xbox 360 instead of just 'nope, doesn't work'.

At any rate, I can manage to connect now through a VPN, but that's naturally not multiplayer-capable. Works for those single-player online modes though (say, Spartan Ops in Halo 4).

Good thing I'm moving soon.
