Can't connect controller on initial setup

Console is a 1TB version that comes with Madden 16 dowload

I can't connect a controller on initial setup. Console powers on, shows the controller on screen. When I press the xbox button on the controller, the xbox light on the controler flashes, but never connects.

I have tried the following with two brand new controllers (they synced and updated on another console without issue):

1. multiple sets of fresh batteries.

2. pressing the sync button on the front left corner of the xbox one, and holding the sync the button on the controller until the logo flashes fast. Also, controller sync first, then xbox sync.

3. plugging the controller into the console via micro usb cable.

4. Unplugging the console, and plugging it back in to power.

Does the console sync button work before initial setup is complete?

Do you need to hold down the console sync button or just press and release?

Should something happen to the console logo when you press the console sync button (the console power button/logo stays solid)?

I am at loss and believe the brand new console is defective.

Networking issues

Is your device in the setup phase of booting, if it is, please connect to wired to allow the initial setup to complete, then you should be able to connect to the WIFI network without any issue. This seems to be fairly common issue when doing an initial
setup on reboot.

My Controller Freezes

Try clearing your system cache first. How you do that is:

support.xbox.com/.../clear-system-cache

Once you do that, also re-"pair" the controller to the xbox (press the connect button on controller, and also on the console. Having done that, does the problem still persist?

I'm having the same problem. Brand new and I can't get out of the screen that wants me to hit the home button.

Update: swapped a working xbox one from a friend. My xbox one still doesn't work at his house, and his works fine at mine. Seems like the console is the problem. Any other suggestions?

Could the offline diagnostic work?

you are wrong. you only need a power source, tv, and internet connection for initial setup. possibly a couple batteries for the controller.

After the initial setup you can take the console offline and continue to play your disc games without a connection if you prefer. It is the initial setup that requires the connection.
