Can't change Microsoft Account

When I try to change the Microsoft account associated to my gamertag I get a message telling me that it can't be changed right now even though I created a new email 2 months ago and there is no gametag associated to the new account. Is there a way to figure
out what is preventing it and I haven't change the email associated to my gamertag and the last time I downloaded my gamertag was when the xbox one was release.

Sign in using your Xbox Live gamertag.

Go to settings and select Account.

Scroll right to Your Information and select Account Security.

Select Microsoft account (Your Windows Live ID is your Microsoft account.)

Do one of the following:

If you already have another Microsoft account, select Yes.

If you don't have another Microsoft account, go to accounts.live.com and click Sign up. After you have another Microsoft account set up, select Yes and continue with the next step.

Enter the password for the Microsoft account that is currently associated with your gamertag and select Sign in.

Enter the email address and the password for the new Microsoft account that you want to associate with your gamertag, and then select Sign in.

Select Yes, change to change the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox Live account.

Select Update Contact Information to update your contact information or Done to finish.

Notes

If you try to switch your Xbox Live gamertag (or Xbox Music tag) from one Microsoft account to a different Microsoft account that's already linked to another Xbox Live gamertag, you'll get the following error message:

The Microsoft account (or Windows Live ID) you’re switching to is already linked to another Xbox account.

Before you can switch your gamertag in this case, you must first remove the existing gamertag from the Microsoft account you want to use. Here's how:

Consider the following scenario:

Gamertag A is linked to Microsoft account 1.

Gamertag B is linked to Microsoft account 2.

In this scenario, your gamertag is Gamertag B, and you want to move it to Microsoft account 1.

At accounts.live.com, create a new Microsoft account. You'll only need this account as a temporary means of moving your gamertags.

Example:

Gamertag A is linked to Microsoft account 1.

Gamertag B is linked to Microsoft account 2.

Microsoft account 3 is free.

Switch the gamertag that's linked to the Microsoft account you want to use to the Microsoft account that you created in Step 3.

Example:

Microsoft account 1 is now free.

Gamertag B remains linked to Microsoft account 2.

Gamertag A is now linked to Microsoft account 3.

Switch your gamertag to the Microsoft account that you want to use.

Example:

Gamertag B is now linked to Microsoft account 1.

Microsoft account 2 is now free.

Gamertag A remains linked to Microsoft account 3.

To complete the switch of gamertags between the two original Microsoft accounts, you must wait 30 days. After 30 days, switch Gamertag A from Microsoft account 3 to Microsoft account 2.

Gamertag B remains linked to Microsoft account 1.

Gamertag A is now linked to Microsoft account 2.

Microsoft account 3 is now free.

Cancel the Microsoft account that you created in step 2.

Example:

Gamertag B is now linked to Microsoft account 1.

Gamertag A remains linked to Microsoft account 3.

Microsoft account 3 is cancelled.

When you change to a new Microsoft account, the current funds in your original Microsoft account do not transfer to your new Microsoft account.

You can move a gamertag to a different Microsoft account only once every 30 days.

This includes new gamertags downloaded from Xbox Live.

If you try to move a gamertag before 30 days have passed since the last time you moved it, you’ll get the following error message:

Sorry, we can't change your Microsoft account right now.

To change the Microsoft account associated with a child account, you must provide the Microsoft account information for the adult account that has parental control.

You can choose to require input of your Microsoft account password to sign in to Xbox Live. For more information on how to do this, see Password protect your Xbox Live profile.

Hello fellow gamers,

I have the exact same problem as tdrWhitefang. I followed all of the instructions that are given above. More than 30 days passed and the gamertag did not switch. I keep getting the same message over and over again when I try the same process again. WPAK,
I have no currency balance on my xbox live account but do you think that the security proofs need to be correctly set up for the entire process to work? I would really like to hear from you because I am getting tired of all this hassle.

I've heard that security proof issues can be a cause for this so be sure they are set up and verified on both Ms accounts. Also both accounts need to be from the same region.

Thank you for the info. I guess there is no other way than to contact them. What really surprises me though when they ask for the security proof: they want to send a message to an email adress that I haven't used in like 8-10 years. I have no way of logging
into this account because Microsoft says this email adress doesn't exist anymore. That is correct because I did close the account down six years ago. So it absolutely beats me why Microsoft would use this email adress for the security check. Weird stuff going
on!

@ dutch, see you would have made a different proof before you deleted that account (email phone number, ect.) now you can say that you dont have it any more and try it then (I think if you use a microsoft account or gmail or yahoo account that is used
where your IP address is (like a computer that is used with the same account that Dutch Takeshiro is on, it may grant you access.)

You can't. The real name is taken from the Microsoft account, so changing that would change it on any service that uses the Microsoft account.

You can change the email address associated with a Microsoft Account, but you can't just change purchases
or Gamerscore, or content to another account.

Once you've followed the steps above for making a microsoft account out of the email you want you have to change the email on the console.

Sign into your account, go over to Settings, Account/Account Management, arrow over to the right twice to "Account Security" and then "Change Microsoft Account"

Then you'll enter in your current password for you xbox/microsoft account

You can't actually delete the profile. You would need to change the email on that account in order to free it up for use on the account you want.

That's right. Once a Microsoft Account (formerly the Windows Live ID) is created, you can't change the nation, and once you use that Microsoft Account to create an Xbox gamertag, that gamertag is forever tied to that nation, and
cannot be changed. There was an experiment with changing nations for a short while, which was cancelled because of abuse; there's no more changing of nations for accounts.
