    Cannot Understand Microsoft's decision on making the graphics chip.


    Why does the APU of the XBOX one feature using 12 of 14 Compute Units of the GCN plus the 6.6% increase in clock. It is said to ''improve yields'' but what does it mean? In my opinion I think it was a dumb move to pull of the 6.6% frequency boost to the
    Graphics chip. If I were making the chip design I would use all 14CUs and put the frequency to 1GHz, that way it will have a increase Memory Bandwidth. Way-to-go Microsoft.

    Note: I am a big fan to Microsoft's Operating Systems and Gaming Consoles because of good costumer service

    I know that it isn't unicorns and pixie dust that makes it all work... that's just silly! It's magic blue, or white, smoke! It's contained in all electronic hardware. Any electronic device must contain this smoke. If it doesn't, the device will not work.
    Don't believe me? Try it... go ahead... let the magic smoke out of any electronic device you own and see if it works right, if at all, after you do! o-0

    @Lofty.

    I'm with you. I can turn it on and put a game in to play.

    I always thought it was Unicorns and Pixies that made it all work.

    So the problem is that MS employ 14 Pixies to carry out work, but only 12 actually do anything. The other 2 just shove their hands in their pockets and kick fairy dust about.

    I don't know anything about chip design, but I imagine that it was partly to deal with the spec war, and partly because it turned out they could benefit more from clocking it higher than using all the CUs and reducing yields.

    After all, unlike PC APUs or GPUs, they can't use the chips for anything else, so they have to keep yields high.

    My PoS PC for instance, has an AMD A10-6700 APU where the IGPU has been too faulty for retail. But instead of the APU being scrapped altogether, the IGPU has been completely disabled and the APU sold exclusively to HP, rebranded as an FX-670k (sic!) CPU...

    Turnkey stationary PCs and cheap laptops let even the garbage parts be sold. Consoles don't.

    The GPU has 14 CU but only 12 are used. The other 2 are redundant because enabling them would mean that they cant be guaranteed to work on every chip produced, due to manufacturing faults on the chip.

    This is a very complex issue.... Especially when you factor in the upcoming directx 12...

    You can always add more power, the question is can you use it with the bandwidth you have. The PS4 has more power and is optimised to use it. And it shows mostly.

    I'd argue that the xbox one hardware is optimised to use direct x12 and has been patched up to deliver with the current software. DX 12 is a new approach to how graphics are processed so it's hard to judge where the xbox one sits in terms of real capabilites.
    I'm sure that's where all this talk of a balanced system comes from. Phil himself has said that they were well aware of direct x12 when they designed the xbox one and the xbox one offers full support for dx12.

    I'm excited.....

    It can be seen as a safety net or less thought in compatibility of components by design, Either a bad decision or a safe decision.

    In fact, it flew off, went and made a cup of tea, came back, flew around my head a few more times and now it's gone again.

    On a positive not, at least I know how to turn my Xbox One on and start playing games ;)
