Cannot sign in to xbox app -- Bad SSL?

Hello,

I can't sign into the xbox app -- I've traced the issue to a line in the log files:

2023-01-15T01:37:53Z E/XPAFTServer - GRPC: Handshake failed with fatal error SSL_ERROR_SSL: error:1000007d:SSL routines:OPENSSL_internal:CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED., sev=2 ['D:\a\_work\1\s\grpc\src\core\tsi\ssl_transport_security.cc' (1439)]

Is there a way to get the xbox app to reset the SSL certificate it's using?

Windows version: Windows 11 22H2, build 22621.1265

This was working, then broke mid-october. I raised a ton of tickets for both windows and xbox support. They kept referring me to each other and refused to look at the error message above.

No recent activity or changes made before the issue appeared -- it just broke one day

So far, I have tried:

1. Every documented combination of reinstalling via the windows store, including via powershell

2. A repair installation of windows 11 from the ISO

3. Blowing out all files and registry entries related to the xbox app.

4. disabling everything at startup -- which didn't work and caused other issues

Also tried:

1. Ensuring the data and time are correct
2. following the instructions here: Xbox network server connectivity on Windows is blocked | Xbox Support -- which seem dated. the xbox console companion app isn't the one i'm having problems with.

Finally, in the UI, this shows up as error 0x80048888. this error number does not appear in any KB articles.

There is no need to encrypt the forums. I don't believe there are any gaming forums on the web that utilise SSL encryption, just for the forum. Rest assured though, you are safe, Xbox.com uses SSL when you sign in.

To what end? Your account section is already encrypted, you can see this for yourself. If you go to your account settings, even while in forum, you will be asked to sign in via an SSL link.

You are protected, no need for SSL on the forums.
