Cannot record captures onto external drive on series x

I am currently trying to use an external hard drive (seagate usb 3.0) to record captures onto from my xbox series x but cannot get the xbox to record anything. I finally got the drive to show up on the xbox (after hours of reading "must be formatted to ntfs" even though it was) and have managed to set the drive to capture location, but when I press start recording nothing happens. I noticed if I try to record the last 15/30 seconds it says not enough space. However this is an empty 465.6GB drive, so do not understand why there is not enough space. Also says 465.6GB of 465.6GB free on the xbox. If I do a screenshot it works and the screen shot saves on the drive, but don't understand why I can't record? I have tried fully resetting my xbox, it is fully up to date, and I have tried multiple times to clean the hard drive and reformat as ntfs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Let's adjust first your power option.
Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
Select Profile & system > Settings > General > Power options.
Confirm that your power mode is set to Sleep.
Unselect the option When Xbox is off, turn off storage.
Then Restart your Xbox.

Please also check the settings below:

Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
Select Profile & system > Settings > System > Storage devices.

- Format your device for media storage.
- Set as screen capture location

If you use an external drive as the capture location, you can record footage at 1080p that's way longer than 1 minute, but it has 2 important limitations.

1. You have to start and stop the recording manually. You can't use the "record that" feature to capture longer clips of something that just happened; that would still be limited to 1 minute at 1080p.

2. Clips captured on external storage cannot be shared over Xbox Live.

I think it's a good solution if you're recording footage to transfer over to a PC, edit, then upload to YouTube, but it's no good if you want to capture longer clips to share with friends over Xbox Live.

I wonder why they reduced the recording times though. I'm sure when I got my Xbox Series X, there was a 2 minute option for 1080p, but now, as you said, it's only 1 minute.

Xbox Series X games / upgrades / updates has to be installed onto the Series X internal or expansion card SSD,

You can have Xbox One games on your external hard drive that will get an Series X upgrade but the games will need to be transferred to the Series X and then the Series X upgrade will need to be downloaded onto the Series X SSD,

As an example...

I have Marvel Avengers on my external hard drive that will get the Series X upgrade and I will transfer the game over to the Series X SSD ready to download and update the game to the Series X version when available.

Hi you can actually increase te record length of 1080p if you save the game captures to an external hard drive. However it cannot be a drive that you also use to save games to. It needs to be formatted as NTFS and not prepared as an internal drive. You
will then be able to save game captures to it and increase the length of the captures.
