Cannot play online games although I have a valid xbox live subscription

I'm seeing the same problem.

On two different Xbox Ones I'm unable to join a party or play any online games. Instead I get prompted to buy xbox live gold. I've checked the subscription page online (and on the xbox) and it says I still have a valid subscription.

To play online multiplayer you need an Xbox Live Gold subscription. If you don't have that, then you cannot play online.

Xbox Live Silver is the free version of the Xbox. Although you can connect to the internet with it and download games and demos you cannot play online with people. You can chat with your friends in private chat, but you cannot talk with friends in
a party chat.

With Xbox live gold you can go online in multi-player mode and play with your friends while in party chat. You can also get game demos and games earlier than people who only have Xbox live silver.

Just to add some clarity to this...

Any 'Free to play' game (e.g. Rocket Leage, Fortnite etc.) do not require the Xbox Gold subscription to play online. Games that are not free-to-play (i.e. Grounded) will require Xbox Live Gold to play online. Although you can play games with Game Pass, it does not make them free to play online.

Your friend will either need to have Xbox Live Gold or convert his Game Pass subscription to Game Pass Ultimate, which includes both.

You need a valid subscription to Xbox Live in order to play online. I would confirm that yours is still good and active then try again.
