Cannot log into microsoft/live account after an Xbox account for child was created

when we signed up for Xbox1 years ago my husband logged into Microsoft and my son began his Xbox gaming under that account, the parent account. We do not want him on the parent account. I would ideally like to save his progress and transfer that
to a child’s account. Any ideas?

A parent (adult account) cannot be changed to a child account. Whether an account is an adult or child account is determined by the date of birth entered on the Xbox Live account when it was first created. This date of birth also cannot be changed.

Nothing is transferrable between accounts either so if you did create him his own child account they would unfortunately be starting all over with their save game progress.

Child accounts are "Child Accounts" because they are under the age of majority in the country you live in. It goes off the birthday listed on the Microsoft account when the tag is created. If the child is under the age of majority you cannot just turn
it into an adult account.

If she is on a child account, you would have to create a new online account from scratch. Offline child accounts cannot be converted to Live accounts.

Every person, adult or child, should have their own Microsoft account (email) when using any Microsoft services, including Xbox Live. When creating a child Microsoft account using their correct age, and then adding it to an Xbox console to create an Xbox
Live profile, the profile will automatically set default privacy restrictions for the age of the child. Then, the parent can add the child to a

Microsoft Family and use the many features of parental control to monitor what your child does on Xbox Live, set content restrictions, ask to buy, set time limits, and manage privacy settings.

It's very important to create a
child Microsoft account for a child when they want to use Xbox Live so that a child is not using someone else's account besides their own, which can be monitored through Microsoft Family parental controls. Creating a child account for the child when they
first want to use Xbox Live, with restrictions suitable for the age you enter, is how you would prevent this situation from occurring.

Unfortunately, Microsoft cannot transfer Gamertags from one account to another and I don't see that changing because there are many features in place so that a parent is not forced to give their child access to their own Microsoft account.

Promote a child account to an adult account in Xbox

Xbox LIVE determines whether an account is a child account or an adult account based on the age of the account owner. Account owners who are younger than 18 are given child accounts in the United States. The legal adult age varies by country and region (for
example, the adult age in Korea is 20).

Child accounts are tied to an adult's Microsoft account. The adult account can control Family Settings and restrict some features of Xbox LIVE.

After you reach the age of adulthood (which varies by country and region), you can promote a child account to an adult account. This promotion removes the Family Settings and Xbox LIVE restrictions.

To promote a child account to an adult account

Sign in to Xbox LIVE by using the account that you want to change.

Go to Settings, and then select Account.

Select Promote Child Account.

Note The age of an account owner is calculated by using the date of birth provided when the account was created. This date cannot be changed. If you entered an incorrect date of birth when you created the account, your only option is to create a new account
using the correct date of birth. This option is available only if the date of birth for the account indicates that you have reached the age of adulthood (18 in the United States). The legal adult age varies by country and region.

Follow the on-screen instructions to promote the account.
