  1. cannot install update

I have an Xbox 360 E with 4 GB of internal memory that I purchased November 2013. The other day when I turned it on it said there was an update to download. I selected yes and it shows a downloading progress bar. Before the bar has moved even one notch,
I get a message about not being able to download the update and it shows this:

Can't download the update. To test your connection, open System Settings and select Network Settings, Test Xbox Live Connection.

If the problem persists, go to www.xbox.com/support

    Status code

    40A3-0000-3080-0300-D000-0185

I looked up that status code on the support web site and it says to remove all storage. However, I cannot remove the storage because I only have the built-in 4GB flash memory.

The Xbox is connected to the network with a wired connection. Here's what I've tried to resolve this issue:

    • Restarted my console. Always wants to install the update but always get the same error code.
    • Tested Xbox LIVE Connection. The connection is good and it then tries to download the update, with the same error code.
    • Made sure I had enough storage space. The 4GB flash memory is completely empty except the system software. There is 1.5 GB of free space.
    • Cleared the cache on the flash memory three times.
    • From a PC, downloaded the update file to a USB flash drive, inserted the flash drive into a USB port on the Xbox, then powered on the unit. It detected the update on the flash drive. It showed an "Extracting..." message but after a few seconds, shows the
same error code. I even tried unplugging my wired network from the Xbox and reboot with the flash drive in. Same result.
    • Tried to roll back an update from Settings -> System -> Storage; then LB, RB, X, LB, RB, X. I agree to the notification. Unit restarts and I get message about downloading an update. If I select Yes, I get the same error code.
    • Tried formatting the 4GB internal memory storage. When I try to format, I get this message:
A required storage device has been removed. Your console will now restart.

Is there anything else I should try to resolve this problem? I'm starting to think the 4GB internal flash memory is bad since it won't let me install the update, even from a USB flash drive. The unit is still under warranty so I might just need to contact
Xbox support to get the unit replaced. However, before I go that route I want to make sure I've exhausted all other possibilities.

    :)

    Hi there,

it sure sounds like something is going on with the 4GB internal flash.

And as far as I know you have tried all options available to try and fix this issue.

My advise is to contact Xbox Support via
    support.xbox.com/contact-us
to see if they have anything to try before registering it for a repair at
    http://myservice.xbox.com

here you can try this: Copy to a USB flash drive

If you cannot connect your Xbox 360 console to the Internet, you can copy the console update from your computer to a USB flash drive and then install it on the console.

Note The USB flash drive must use the FAT32 file system.

Plug your USB flash drive into a USB port on your computer.

    Download the update file.

Click Save to save the console update .zip file on your computer.

Unzip the file. If you are using Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, double-click the .zip file to unzip it.

Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory of your flash drive.

Unplug the USB flash drive from your computer.

Plug the flash drive into a USB port on your Xbox 360 console.

    Restart the console.

When the console restarts, the installation program starts automatically. Select Yes when you are prompted to update the new console software.

    and

Burn to a CD or DVD

You can update your Xbox 360 console software by downloading the update to your computer from Xbox.com, burning the update to a CD or DVD, and then installing the update on your console. Here's how:

On your computer, download the update file.

Click Save to save the console update .zip file on your computer.

Unzip the file. If you are using Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, double-click the .zip file to unzip it.

If you are using Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, double-click the .zip file to unzip it.

If you are using an earlier version of Windows, you need to use a special software program to unzip the file (for example, WinZip).

Insert a blank, writeable CD or DVD into your computer.

Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory on your CD or DVD, and choose to write (burn) the files to the disc.

Once the files have been burned to disc, remove that disc from your computer and insert it into the disc drive on your Xbox 360 console.

    Restart the console.

When the console restarts, the installation program starts automatically. Select Yes when you are prompted to update the new console software.

hope that helpscannot install update :)

oh I thought that was the memory for the xbox unit sorry, ok try this:

Reset XBOX 360 Failed System Updates

With the console off, press and hold the sync up button.

While holding the sync button press the power button to turn on the console

Continue to hold the sync button until the Console has booted up completely.

During the boot process the console should clear any failed updates, allowing you to use it normally.

then try to download the update from live or the USB

hope that helpscannot install update :)

@ Ritzy thanks for the suggestion but, clearing the cache was already tried (like mentioned in the Original threa'.

As far as I can tell, all things were already tried to fix this issue, that's why I advised to contact Xbox Support to see if they have any other things to try, before requesting a repair via the link I mentioned

  10. @ Ritzy I tried the sync up button to clear any failed updates but that didn't help. Thanks for the suggestion though. Also, I already tried clearing the cache on the internal 4GB flash (three times). See my initial post.

I talked to a Xbox support rep and they wanted me to make sure that ports were not blocked on my router. Specifically, they wanted me to make sure the following ports were open: 88, 3073, 53, and 80. My ISP doesn't block any ports on their side. I also made
sure the built-in firewall on my router was disabled and even set up the Xbox's IP address as a DMZ Hosted Device (just to make sure it was completely open to the internet). That didn't help either. I will be contacting Xbox support again to setup a repair.

I have the exact same issue. Why the F do we have to pay $79 for this repair. I have been reading that it has happened to several people after updating. Something about the update causes internal memory failure. Ridiculous!

I have the same issue too after download. I really don't think we should ALL have to pay for the repair when it's obvious it was the update that caused this.

just saying it is free if you still have the warranty, 1.5GB of space is not a lot for any system to run properly due to having to transfer temporary files, house keeping etc.

so maybe getting a new hard drive or delete some space may let it work
