Cannot install update or connect to Xbox live on Xbox 360

I cannot get my son's Xbox 360 to connect to Xbox Live and will not do a system update. It does connect to the internet during a the test but will not go further to connect to Live. I have tried every single thing the Xbox 360 help page tells me to do
and I cannot find a phone number anywhere to try to contact a support agent. Has anyone had these issues and resolved them? I have had almost a years worth of Xbox Live gone to waste because I cannot get this issue resolved. I am VERY frustrated!!

Wait what issue are you all having? Have you downloaded the update but cannot connect to xbox live, or can you not install the initial update?

You can download the update and install via ISB if you cannot connect to the net:

Sorry to hear about your 360. If you haven't already, we suggest you try resetting your network settings by going to Settings>System>Network Settings>Select your Network>Configure Network>Additional Settings>Restore to Factory Defaults.

Hi, do you see any status or error code at all when the update fails, that would be a great help in figuring out what's going wrong. If you can provide that status/error code then please do.

If you skip the update and can get the Xbox onto the dashboard then go to settings/ system settings/ storage. What storage devices are listed in there, do any show as unformatted at all ? If the Xbox is the 4GB model those are prone to the memory unit failing
in which case the Xbox would need to be repaired. You can do a simple check to see if the memory unit had failed by accessing it and seeing if all the files show a size of 0Kb, that's a good indicator that there's an issue with the memory unit.

If all looks well in the storage section then highlight any storage device and press the following buttons in sequence on the controller LB RB X LB RB X, select yes on the next screen and the Xbox will reboot, try the update again after the reboot

There also must be around 300Mb of free space for the system update so if there's not enough free space you will need to delete or move something from the Xbox to an external device to make room for the update.
