Cannot format external drive

Drive will not format when I run through the Xbox prompts. I originally had games saved on it but after the Feb update, it would not detect my drive. Reformatted it on my PC - both NTFS and exFAT, and also tried formatting it in the console with no partition.
It will run through the prompts to format, give me a blue circle for about 10 secs, then nothing. I have to unplug and try again for it to even recognize the drive.

My Xbox One will not format my external

If you have a Windows PC, connect the external hard drive to it and give it a reformat. Sometimes, people need to give a hard drive an extra reformat on the computer because it's currently in a format that the Xbox cannot change (for some reason).

- Connect the external HDD to the PC.

- Go to "My Computer" (Win+E)

- Right click the external hard drive, and select "Format..."

- Ensure it formats to "NTFS", leave all other settings the way they are.

- After it finishes, attempt to format the drive on the Xbox again.

NOTE: If your external hard drive came pre-formatted with more than one partition, you will need to reformat the entire drive so it has one and only one NTFS partition. You can manage disk partitions via "Disk Management" in Windows.

Hello there! So when you format an external hard drive on the XBOX One, the console formats the drive into a file system that a computer PC cannot see. The 360 did not do it that way. A lot of the reason the drive is formatted that way is to prevent piracy,

Needs partition also NTFS, Try a reboot press console button 8 seconds wait 30 seconds while waiting unplug HDD from console power back up, Plug HDD back in see if that helps.

You could try a new cable as well, If this doesn't work it would be helpful for others to know Make Type ect...

 

I have. WD My Passport Ultra 2TB. I've tried a power cycle reboot, formatted to NTFS on PC and still no luck. Have not tried a different cable but the drive works fine when plugged into my PC. I've tried all ports on my console and the Xbox recognizes other
drives for regular media files. I had games installed and running from the external drive until the console was updated with the latest update.

 

Does it give you a prompt to re-format every time you plug it into the Xbox, or just the one? Also what model number hard drive are you working with? Try unpluging your Xbox and plugging it back in, then putting the drive in. If that doesn't work, then see
if it formats with another profile signed in (I wouldn't think this would fix it, but worth a shot).

 

Found this which as help some, Having your HDD Set to power down when the console is turned off can cause issues, Uncheck that option if set to power down with console.
