Cannot connect to Microsoft account

For christmas my brother got minecraft for his nintendo switch lite. Whenever he wants to log in it just says connecting for about five minutes and instead of giving us a link and a code it just says ‘failed to log into microsoft account’ or sometimes
the loading screen does nothing and just goes away. This is really annoying since we cant play cross platform with this issue. Any solutions?
