As stated by Xbox Forums Ambassador PalmettoBling, by using the

Services and subscription page, you are able to configure what services you would like to contiune using, this way you can keep your payment instrument on your account to make additional purchases.

However, if you do plan on removing your card from your account, keep in mind that you will be unable to do so if you have a pending balance on your account. In this case, you would have to first settle this balance in order for you to remove this
card.

I hope this is able to clear up any confusion or turmoil this might have caused.

If you sign into
your Microsoft Account page, you can manage your Subscriptions under Payments & Billing. If you turn off Auto-Renewal for your subscriptions associated with a card, then you can go to Payment Options under Payments & Billing and remove the card fully from
your account, if there are no outstanding charges.
