Can you partition an external HDD to use with Xbox One?

I have an external HDD I use with my PC. I know that when you hook up external storage to your X1, you need to setup the drive first, which involves formatting it. Since I already have files I keep on there from my PC, is it possible to partition the drive
and set it so xbox will only format the partitioned drive, rather than the entire HDD, thus keeping my files intact?

    :)

Xbox 360 running out of space on hdd

I am running out of space on my 20gb hdd and was wondering if i can use my external western digital 500gb hdd with my xbox 360? I know that they are a 16gb limit but was wondering if you can partition the 500gb hdd into separate partitions to be used with
the xbox 360 or is it just 16gb total that can be used from a external hdd?

Indeed it cannot be partitioned on the PC

The basic requirements for an external drive are:

•Has capacity of 256 GB or more

    •Uses USB 3.0

    Formatting Hard Drive

The Format Hard Drive function is also there so that you can format external USB 3.0 HDD's with the appropriate Xbox partition for saving games etc. By default, a new external HDD would come with a FAT or NTFS partition which cannot be used for installing
Xbox games. A NTFS partitioned external hard drive can be used however for extended Game DVR clips.
