Can you not use a 4TB hard disk for capturing clips on Xbox One X?

    Hello.

Xbox One X latest software update from 12.12.2019.

I have a Seagate Backup Plus portable USB3 hard disk with 4TB capacity that I want to use on is entirety for capturing videoclips of my gaming sessions. Windows initializes and partitions this hard disk as a GPT disk with one 4TB partition. This is standard
behavior for disks bigger than 2TB. I then format it with NTFS and everything looks normal.

When I move the disk to the console, I get the message that it cannot be used as capture location. It only gives me the choice to format it as game storage.

If I configure the disk on Windows as an MBR disk the Xbox accepts it without any problem as capture location. The problem is that configured as an MBR disk I cannot use the entire capacity because MBR has a limit of 2TB.

I want to know how do I need to configure a disk bigger than 2TB so it can be used in its entire capacity as media capture location on the Xbox One X.

    Thank you.

    :)

Thank you for reporting back that you could use the 3TB HDD. I have solved the problem and follow to post what has been done. Maybe some others can find the answer in this post too because information about this specific issue was very scarce on the net.
My problem was that I had initialized the disk on my Mac (I use Paragon NTFS so I can access and format NTFS disks from macOS), what happens is that macOS (not Paragon NTFS) appears to always insert an EFI partition at the start of every disk you initialize
on a Mac, ths was the key, this EFI partition was making that the Xbox One to not use the disk as capture location. I launched a Windows virtual machine on VMware Fusion and from there I wiped everything from the disk using Diskpart. I then initialized the
disk from Windows Disk manager and this time it created only 1 volume on the disk, not 2 as when it was done from the Mac. I formatted as normal using NTFS and the full 4TB can be now used as capture location on the One.

BUT: It would have been much more easier doing this. This was written by a kind user answering me on Reddit:

If you accidently initialised the disk as a MBR an easy way to get it back to GPT is to let the xbox configure the drive for installing games on and then plugging the disk back into the PC and letting it reformat the disk accordingly.

Doing this will spare the use of Diskpart or any other partition utility. I will post this text here as this was the error message I was getting, there is very few places with information about this on the net. Maybe other people suffering from the same
will find the answer here if they google for the error code:

I just tried adding my Seagate Backup Plus portable USB3 hard disk with 3TB capacity for game capture purposes and it appears to work (I was able to assign it as capture location...haven't tried capturing any game play yet) as a capture location.

After you initialize and format your external HDD on your PC, did you create any folders on the external storage? In case it matters, I didn't after selecting GPT - Simple volume and format as NTFS with no file/folder compression enabled (in case the latter
    matters).

Did you rename your external drive during the format process? In case it matters, I did on mine and called it XBOXCLIPS1.

When you connected the HDD to the console, did it prompt you to use the drive for game or media storage? I selected media storage.

Did you go into Settings - System - Storage, select the HDD and then select Set as capture location? I did this in case it matters or is different than doing it via Settings - Preferences - Capture & share - Capture location (this UI location is also displayed
when using Xbox nexus button - move right to Capture & share - move down to Capture settings).

    Good luck!

    Unable to Record Xbox One

    I'm Samy an independent advisor

    How are you, Stephen?

When you connect the external hard drive to your console does a screen appear asking you to format the drive to record captures? And have you also set your preferences to use the hard drive?

Press the Xbox button  to open the guide, and then select Profile & system > Settings > Preferences > Capture & share.

Select Capture location, and then choose a destination for your game clips and screenshots.

    To start a recording>

Start your game. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.

Select Capture & share > Start recording. Depending on your game clip resolution and available storage space, clips can last up to 10 minutes (capturing to internal storage) or 1 hour (capturing to external storage).

To end the clip, open the guide and press the X button . You'll get a message when your clip is saved.

How do I record 16 minutes of blackout gameplay through theater mode?

if you recorded the clip by pressing the Xbox button then pressing X then you can upload it to One Drive by going to the Recent Captures on your Xbox, selecting the clip you want to upload then selecting See All Sharing Options
