Sure it can get annoying sometimes. Some of it is good intentions. Others can be just because whatever basically or even derogatory. M does provide tools such as Block Communications. I only report it if it's derogatory like swearing aimed at me I've reported
such messages three times in the past aka file a complaint. Or, you can simply go into your Privacy Settings (lol) and change it so you can only receive messages from your friends (but it would kind of diminish your social experience).

You are welcome to Report spam as it does say something about it in, ahmm, G, the thing you honour so much, the TOC/COC. But for me and several others, we only file a complaint if there's really good reason too.

Sometimes I do make jokes with friends, and on here have seen some, my thread is a bit off topic, maybe report me? or when I'm in a party and someone kills me or my friends or seeing offensive emblems. Two of my friends were joking they were going to report
a GT beginning with Squid because they're subscribed to SkydoesMC and he doesn't like squid. But we only report/file legit.

Not everyone has to want spam. Our mailbox has a no circulars sign. If we get circulars dumped in it my folks are welcome to report it to our city council just as much as we have the right to report it to M but only if necessary and it violates any TOC/COC.
I still think you should have some leniency in your social options on XBL, that'll help you make friends and meet new peps.

 

@Undead, if I had no interest in Halo, yes, your spamming me. (Out of interest do you make any money from the community, advertising, events etc?), If i sent you messages of my web site selling stuff would you appriciate it? (oh and I kept doing it)

The block system doesn't work well, if you block someone and they join your lobby, it mutes everyone in that lobby including your friends, so in this case I would prefer to report them than block them, this should also stop them spamming other people.

I send messages to people on my friends lists, but I try to only message people I think would be interested, and if they say don't or even hint they don't want them, i stop.

All my friends have come from either playing with them in lobbies meeting them by chance, or from forums where we communicate first, I haven't met people from spam.

On a side not, if people keep getting away with spamming, were does it stop? and when word gets around that its fine, who will start?

When an insurance agency sends me a flyer, email, letter thats with good intentions from their point of view, not mine.

If you send spam, you take the risk, I for one am glad its not implemented, on a side note most of the things which were abused on the 360 haven't been added to the Xbox One, IMO this is one on the list.

 

if the site sold stuff and a good price and that i would be interested in and i would be glad,

What I don't like is that the term "spam" is quite subjective. Me for example, if you send me a negative message and/or ask me to do something that violates the CoC/ToU, then I would consider that spam. However, if it's inviting me to something, asking me
about something, a friendly message, something you want to show me, etc. (even if I don't know you), then I wouldn't consider that spam.

Some people would consider all of the above spam simply if it's somebody they don't know or if they found it annoying and will take action against them, which IMO, is wrong and unfair.

Otherwise, for the most part, I agree with Smileskybird.

 

...and just to clarify, if someone is advertising for a website or another source in the hopes of making money, that does violate the CoC and IS considered spam in MS' eyes and as such is a reportable offense. That is something that I'm not okay with.

Davey, based on your last post, I'd say you're missing out on a wonderful opportunity to meet and make new friends. If a stranger sends you a message, sure you can ignore it (which would obviously be the safer option), but you can also use it to start a
dialogue with the player who sent the message.

 

I'm with EnenDaveyBoy on this subject an I'm not one to report anyone for anything.

I actually don't like the "message to all friends' feature so the ability to mass mail your recent played list would turn me into a reporting/blocking machine.

The only people I have ever removed from my friends list have been for "spamming" their events and other things that I'm sure they considered important but I didn't. Shortly after the One launch I had about a dozen people on my friends list sending out "M2AF"
messages daily and it drove me nuts.

If you want to host an event go to one of the websites that allows you to organize them or go to the games official forums. Mass mailing messages to recent players is not the appropriate way to organize those events.

 

Its not harsh or unfair it would be the rep system you've been adamantly defending working perfectly fine, it would about as harsh or unfair as being reported for playing a game well or using things as intended that aint to someone elses liking but you'd
be ok anyway right, bad rep, its all speculation n that and you've never taken a rep hit etc so why worry about being reported for it i'm sure the enforcement team would look over it etc lol

i am with the block/delete/report it list, if i want a community game i'd look online for a community to join, all the mass messaging will do is bring back the millions of annoying messages.... quick scope lobby, join my clan, 1v1, boosting lobby etc etc
it's highly annoying if they added it in i'd want a feature to exempt me from any such mailing just like the filters i have set in my email otherwise well it'll be a long haul of reports.

I'd hope they'd bring back the sections, if you can be barred from mp games for reports then you should be bared from communication outside of your friends list for communication reports untill the wait out period has past, keep it all fair n that.

@GG without reading the T&C, I would assume that advertising of any sort is against the rules, sending out massive messages advertising a community to random people who the user who has simply crossed paths, should be against the rules. Maybe if the OP did
some research they would be able to find a proper method to advertise their community and get some real valuable coverage.

If I was interested in a community, I would do what most people do, and do some research, I wouldn't expect to be spammed with it, which IMO simply lowers the value of the community.

Theres a big difference in people sending messages to a small group of players to fill a lobby, and sending messages to fill lobbies, meet and play games, which is what the messaging system is intended.

(Note to self, pass on Nigeria relatives/Lottery letters to GG and the OP as they would be more appreciative of it)

I've never had a problem finding people to play with in online gaming communities (but never tried with Halo). If your the one doing the organizing you need to be professional and organized. Not saying this applies to you......I see lots of people looking
for people to play with that post "leet" speak type post ( hardcore gamers only, etc). walls of text or just appear to be idiots. What and how you say it makes a huge difference in who will respond or not respond to it.

I have no problem with someone on my friends list sending me messages regarding play times and dates for games I own and am currently playing but I was getting them for games I didn't even own.

 

There is a user on this forum, he can fill a lobby in most games without an issue, he takes the time to get to know people in game and on the forum, he takes the time to know what games people play and he sends people on his friends list info an events he
tolds,

he fills them because he isn't asking random people and hoping to get lucky, he fills them because he has put the work in.

Spamming random people will have a tiny success rate in the same way leaflet drops and and random marketing mail, and untarget PPC ads have a tiny success rate.
