Can xbox one x run at 1440p for higher fps?

Sure its not as powerful, but 4k needs roughly 4 times the power to run... And there's no way the x is even close to that.

The Xbox One S has far worse performance. Weaker GPU, lower clocked CPU.

Assassins Creed Odyssey on Xbox One S can drop as low as 720p on its dynamic resolution scaler and it does this more often than not. But runs at a pretty much locked 30 on One X and generally hits 3072,1728 in resolution. The reason it can't do 60 is down
to limited CPU power.

Gears 5 is 30 fps on Xbox One S at around 1080P (again scaled dynamically), but capable of 60 fps at 1080P on Xbox One X. But this is a linear game, not a massive open world like an Assassin Creed game.

If your CPU is weak, and the Xbox One, S and X are no power-houses, it won't matter as much what the GPU is capable of. This is why many games are locked at 30 fps. In terms of graphics, the CPU draws the scene and sends this data to the GPU which then renders
the scene. If the CPU can't draw fast enough for the GPU to render, you get a bottleneck, at least you do on a PC. To solve this, console games run at a lower frame rate.

Historically - and I'm talking about the first proper games console, the classic Atari VCS released in 1977 - games consoles have always run at or near their limits. These machines are designed for a specific purpose, sold to a target audience at a specific
price point.

Really? That's quite interesting... So what are the options for killer instinct? You set the resolution in game?

4k @ 60 fps?

1440p @ 60fps?

1080p @ 120fps?

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Having the game run at a lower resolution should increase fps.

I take these options for granted on the pc. I really think that they would be useful for consoles though.

I'm not sure why it would be difficult for games to support the choice.

Every pc game ever has loads of supported resolutions...

I'm pretty sure the list of selectable resolutions is just read from the list of supported resolutions the OS has detected. Might be wrong.

What do you mean framerate is tied to game functions? Frame rate is nothing more than how many frames the TV is displaying (up to the amount the system is outputing) ...

If you mean when the game world becomes taxing on the system its tied to fps I can see what you mean. Again, hard drive issues and network issues are 100 percent not the issue I'm talking about. Take my halo example for instance.

And what do you mean inconsistencies? I'd find it impossible to believe you've never seen frame drops or stuttering on your xbox... I've seen it in every game I've played so far. Which is normal when the system is being taxed to push 4k.

At 1440p however I think a smooth fps of 60 would be possible, maybe with some slight Dips down to around 50, (which would be pretty unnoticeable).

So hang on gears 5 you can choose to run it at 1080p on one x for 60fps? Or 4k 30? That kinda goes against it running everything at 4k?

Yeah everything you say seems believable. Didn't realise the one x was that much faster than the s... Seems like I made the right choice after all.

I can't say I'm not impressed. For the 260 quid I paid I couldn't even buy an rtx2060, let alone say an amd 3600 and everything else to go with it. And it's a 4k blu Ray player.

Wether it's checkerboarding or slightly scaled down it it does look crisp as hell. Albeit a little juddery. Perhaps halo is just a really bad example and most other games are fine. Would have thought they'd of put a lot of effort optimising a game like halo
to run at a locked 30 or 60fps. Especially halo 1, it still looks pretty old school.

Well there's my answer then:

No 1440p and no point, because the xbox always processes and outputs a 4k signal.

A massive shame. And seems a terrible waste of electricity/efficiency and lifespan of the product, always running it at its limits - I'm sure there are millions of people who are using the xbox x on a 1080p screen.

Why even have the option of changing

resolution to 1080p on the x settings I wonder?

I know console manufacturers have to keep things simple for console gamers but changing res isn't rocket science.

I've even played games where you can turn effects on and off (the division light effects)... I rekkon/hope the series x will introduce at least some basic options like this which can improve performance... But if there's no resolution settings or at least
res scaling options I won't be buying one. Gaming at 30fps isn't great, and anything less is unplayable imo. Breaks all immersion for me.
