Can someone's Xbox live be hacked to send inappropriate messages?

Hello, my son has recieved some inappropriate messages from a friend's old account. The friend is saying their accounts been hacked.

I'm trying to work out if this is true.

Would someone hack an account just to send messages /threats? Is this common?

It happends to a lot of people my account did the same thing and i know i didnt send them. People get mad on xbox and try to get peoples accounts band by doing that

Usually, sending inappropriate messages is a by-product of an account theft (not hacking).

When the friend used an insecure password and didn't have Two Step Verification enabled, or maybe did engage in "Game Sharing" and voluntarily gave someone else access to their account, the person that hijacked the account usually tries to purchase stuff
as a "gift" for their own account.

If that is not possible, the attacker tries to do as much damage as possible and sends inappropriate messages to others, hoping that they report these messages to get the account banned.

Since we in this forum are just normal users, we can't look into the account history of the friend's account. So what he says can be true, it can also be a lie.

However, if the friend would want their account back, they can try to recover their account using these instructions to recover their Microsoft Account

It is possible that he got hacked. I think its not common to just send inappropriate messages. It could be a side effect.

Also I would recommend to set up the 2 step verification on your own accounts for more security.

it is very likely that if the friend's old account was hacked that whoever did it would send messages to everyone on the account's friends list.

in your post you say that it is the friend's "old account". is the friend using a different new account now because their original account was hacked? if this is the case then it I would say that it is definitely the hacker using the account to send offensive
messages rather than risking getting their own account banned

It could happen but it just sounds like an excuse from the person sending messages that should of not be written in the first place.
