    I found an usual gem. So it told me to go to Riften so I did. And I try to talk to Maul but he wont talk to me he keeps telling me to go away. Is there any other way to get the usual gem appraised?

    Agreed; I just pick them up as I find them. It becomes a quest and is on the low rung of my ladder to do. I think I have 6-8 now that I've come across.
