Can someone explain how child account purchases work within a 'family'?

So, if I put money on my child's account and he purchases something. Who really owns that item? Who needs to be signed into a console other than my 'home console' in order to access that content?

You should be able to make the purchase on the child account by giving parental consent. The other option would be to purchase a gift card for the child account.

with physical copies you can share the games, its not locked to your user profile

also Xbox Market place has always been more Expensive then shops and other online retailers for some reason even when games have dropped to past half price MS have charged more

If you put money on the child's account and he purchases something, he owns that item since it was purchased on his account. On his Home console, anyone can be signed in to access the game. On any other console, his account has to be signed in in order to
access the game.

As far as I know Child Accounts are not eligible to upgrade to a Family Pack sub. Maybe someone else can confirm this as truth or not?

If that is the case and your sons account is a Child Account then you'll need an Adult Account to make the purchase.

But the Family Pack FAQ should answer the most common questions going.

To manage a child's account you have to create an account for him and add him to a family group. Within the family group you can manage their account, add money, restrict the use of content and time on the console, authorize purchases and so on.

You can either subscribe using their account or subscribe with your account and put your account home on your child's console. By placing your account as home on your child's console he will have access to the games/subscription you buy and play using his own account.

Hi Andrew!

You need to purchase the subscription within your child’s account.

Try to disable first his purchase approval under your family settings.

Go to https://family.microsoft.com > click on his account > Spending > Require approval… set to Off.

Then after that, purchase again the subscription using your child’s account. Let me know if that works.
