Can no longer use external storage

Sometime around Mar / Apr my 8TB external drive stopped showing up in storage on my Xbox One X. Did some troubleshooting with a tech but figured that it was probably due to the fact that I am part of Insiders programs so maybe something went wrong with the
update on my console but might be corrected with the next patch. Have not touched my console since them but today discovered that the problem still persists even after applying the latest updates.



The external hard drive is not recognized by the console. This hard drive is recognized by a PC and PS4 just fine (obviously I have not formatted it, since I want to continue to use it with my Xbox One X).
Tried several other hard drives and a USB flash drive with this console that are recognized by PC just fine - same results. This is not a problem with the hard drive(s) that I am using.



Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further? This is a launch day Scorpio edition machine and other than this issue, it has been working fine.

Dashboard Laggy When Certain Game Is Installed

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this. Perhaps the issue is with storage. With 900+ DLC packages the game can take up quite a bit of room.

Perhaps try adding an external storage device if you are not currently using one. You can use a USB 3.0 device ranging in size from 256GB - 16TB in size for external storage. Hopefully, when added, you can put the game and DLC on that and no longer experience
these slow downs.

Something else to try is a factory reset on the console to see if that will result in any changes. Which can be done with leaving games and apps installed

Yep tried this on every USB port. Also Kinect powers on and is detected but does not work - can't sign in and Kinect setting page shows a black screen representing what Kinect sees. I can try factory reset tomorrow.

 

I've been having the same issue with my Seagate 5TD drive. I've tried it in every USB port. I ended up purchasing a new drive and that one works just fine... I'm also in the Insider program.

It definitely doesn't sound like it's the drive or the USB ports themselves on the Xbox. One thing that may help is disconnecting your xbox from power for about 30 seconds, then plugging it back in. If that doesn't work, it does sound like it's software related.
The factory reset that was suggested (with the option to keep games & apps) may also help.

 

If you don't care about the data on it (should just be games you can re-download?) why not try it on your PC, format and run whichever diagnostics the manufacturer has for it?

 

Just tried that and the only difference is that Kinect is now working again. But same results with the hard drive.

 

Good to hear I am not the only one but that is not a really good option, considering there is nothing wrong with the drive.

 

In my case, the drive is recognized by PS4 just fine. But Xbox does not recognize ANY storage device - several hard drives or USB flash drive.

 

Pulled the plug, restarted, same results...

 

I just checked and I’m not seeing any reports of it being a known issue for any of the preview rings. That being said, have you tried plugging the console directly into an outlet instead of a power strip (if you currently are)?

Worst case you could unenroll the system from the Insider Program, wait a couple of days, perform a system reset and you should then be on the last stable public release, however this will start you back at beginning preview ring should you decide to re-enroll
and we’re not even sure that’s the issue.

 

I unenrolled from the Insider program and after resetting the console was able to use 32GB flash drive but not the hard drive. But after that, even the flash drive was no longer recognized.

Called tech support and they wasted my time for about 45 mins. After that I drove to my local MS store and asked them to help triage it for me. The tech at the store suggested that the Insider update somehow messed up my console's BIOS and they would not
be able to resolve this at the store, so they just swapped out my console for a new one. It is not a Scorpio like mine was but at least it works.

I am not enrolling in the Insider program for Xbox ever again.
