Can my external hard drive cause my xbox series x to freeze

I had my fiest ever freeze in the my games and apps library and my console makes an electric noise when the hdd storage device is in and stops when I unplug it. I was wondering could my external hard drive be the reason for that issue and does it hinder my console. I have an expansion card so i have a decent amount of storage. Also i have 200 games installed. Im just wondering could that result in the console freezing.
