Can longer use Home Theater and also wired mono chat headset

Something has been changed for the worse. I used to be able to have Dobly Atmos output via HDMI and also plug in my mono chat headset. Game audio through my home theatre and voice chat in my ear.

Now as soon as I plug it in, my HDMI switches to LPCM and the output audio format is greyed out. The only change on my end (besides being an insider Alpha) is a new controller on my Xbox One S. Oh and previously using Dolby Atmos for Headphones on the same HDMI output (passed through AVR and TV to Bluetooth).

If by chance the output audio isn't greyed out, when selecting Dolby Atmos for Home Theater, I get a message saying that I need to be using HDMI. :-(

Unable to use chat headset and HDMI surround sound on OneX and SeriesX

When I say working as intended, I mean that it is working as it was designed to work - not necessarily a reflection on the expectations of the user, but the expectation set when the execution of the systematic functions occurs.

I asked: "If a user is trying to use a mono headset for chat and wants game audio through their surround sound system to still play Dolby Atmos or DTS through HDMI output while its connected, is that possible?"

    The answer:

    • A Mono headset that is only used for chat/party and does not change the audio settings selected by the user. So, if a user chooses Dolby Atmos for home theater, the audio will continue to be in Atmos.
    • Only a stereo Headset will switch it.
    • Additional Edit: if the system recognizes the headset as a mono headset no audio setting changes, and it can only be used by chat.
Is the screenshot you shared in your report what appears when the headsets you have pictured earlier in the thread are plugged in? Are those headsets made for any kind of gaming aspect or are they just standard headsets for use on different devices? And on the Headset Audio are their additional options that open for the audio? This setting specifically:

    Headset connection direct to console?

is there a place to plug a wired headset directly into the Xbox One and just get chat sound ( no game sound included)? for example, can I plug a USB headset directly into the console for chat only? The reason being, if there's a USB port that i can use
to get chat only, I've found a USB adapter that'll allow you to connect it to a Bluetooth headset. Hence, I can have a simple mono headset that gives me chat only and I can get surround sound from my surround set up without having to hear people through my
speakers or have people hear conversations that occurr in my family room between people. They also don't need to be assaulted by the vulgarity of gamers. I'm trying to replicate the Xbox 360 headset experience.

XBox One X: Headset chat on 3.5mm controller port with home theater Dolby Atmos issues.

    Hi there!

Thank you for posting on the forums today, I'd be happy to help.

I've seen a similar issue with receivers having issues properly connecting through HDMI with certain display settings on the TV and Xbox. What are your display settings and what TV do you have?

It's interesting that everything seems fine once you unplug the headset, have you tried another controller by chance?

Let us know so we can further assist you!
I can verify that it is not a video settings issue. All of that is set fine and working. As an IT expert and a hobbyist of home theater and video system design and setup, something simple has not stumped me. If I'm here seeking assistance, it is probably
due to the fact it is more than a simple config issue.

This is has to do with the way stereo headsets are coded into the OS and mix in game audio. With a headset in, I can still select bitstream, but then only DTS or Dolby Digital. Dolby Atmos for Home Theater gives an error about not compatible with optical
    / headphones and requires HDMI.

I have tried the original XBox Chat Headset, that plugs into the controller accessory port, which is mono and has no game audio mix, the issue does not happen with this device. This proves the issue is related to when game audio is mixed into the headset,
even if you change the mix fully to chat the underlying system is still mixing chat and game audio, just with zero volume for game audio.

I do not like the standard headset as it blocks one ear completely. I've invested way to much into home theater to have one ear completely covered distorting the surround sound effect, that is why I chose the Plantronics RIG 100HX as it doesn't block home
    theater sound.

I have also tried the Chatpad, which has a 3.5mm stereo port and mixes in game audio, and the same issue of audio settings changing occurs with inability to select Dolby Atmos as an output option. This is more proof that it is related to the system and
not just the 3.5mm jack of the controller or my configuration.

The resolution would be an option in audio output settings to "disable game audio in headset" or to have an accessory adapter which only provides mono chat audio to a 3.5mm jack, same as the MS Headset I tried, just with 3.5mm jack instead of hard wired
    headset.

Unable to use chat headset and HDMI surround sound on OneX and SeriesX

Thank you. And to be clear so that I can make sure I am understanding correctly, the behavior you're expecting is that when plugging in a mono headset it is for not just chat but to pass game and chat audio to the headset? or is the mono headset only meant to pass chat while the surround sound system continues to cast game and console audio and is switching the TV/Surround sound audio from its settings? Thus when unplugging the surround sound system works as intended but does not work as intended when a mono headset is plugged in.

With the sony headset are you trying to pass all sound through the headset? or through the headset and the surround sound system?

    Thanks,

    John

Unable to use chat headset and HDMI surround sound on OneX and SeriesX

    Hi John,

The headsets I use are very very old tech. Back when people had phones on their walls, and eventually, you could get a wireless phone at 2.4Mhz (Mhz not Ghz). These were designed to plug into those. Eventually, they would be compatible with old cell phones (pre-iPhone/Android era - even though they do work with newer phones if you have the right adapter). The headphones themselves are mono. You can tell by the number of black lines on the plugs. the 2.5mm plugs on the headphones have 2 lines: 1 for the microphone channel, and a second line for the mono audio channel. The adapters that allow them to plug into the controller, however, are stereo and have 3 lines: 1 for the microphone channel, a second line for the left audio channel, and a third line for the right audio channel.

    • So, where does my scenario fall? I fall into both categories because of the adapter. I no longer have any of my old Xbox wired headsets, and I don't recall MS making them anymore - besides they're terribly uncomfortable.
Is the screenshot you shared in your report what appears when the headsets you have pictured earlier in the thread are plugged in? Are those headsets made for any kind of gaming aspect or are they just standard headsets for use on different devices? Like I mentioned earlier, these are bare bones basic headsets. And on the Headset Audio are their additional options that open for the audio? This setting specifically: see attached pic:
