Sorry but you cannot set up a Gold membership using the currency. You should be able to purchase items from the Xbox Store on either console using the currency. If it does ask you to add another payment option then that would be as a precaution in case
the item(s) you purchase goes above the amount you have in credit. The alternate payment option would be used only to cover any difference in cost that would be incurred via excess cost or taxes.

You can only use a prepaid credit card that enables you to add more money to it and requires you to register it. If you say your card isn't working, then it won't work at all. You can just use your prepaid credit card to purchase a LIVE subscription card
at a local retailer.

However, you can't add a prepaid gold card without paying off the balance first.
