Can I use an external HDD to install games to?

just to be sure, are the games installed on an external hdd? If so can you try what happens if the game is installed on a different external hdd or the internal hdd.

You can use it to store games as long as it's usb 3.0 and has at least 256gb of space, however the console will have to format it and you will loose whatever is stored on there.

You can use your external hard drive to install games. However, this requires formatting, and therefore a loss of the backup data of your Mac on it.

Absolutely you can! Your Xbox will format it specifically for storing games, so you won't be able to also use it for your Time Machine backups, but you can use any USB 3.0 storage device over 128gb as an external game drive on your Xbox One.
