Can I upload my Xbox save files to OneDrive? (Addressing the STARFIELD SAVE ISSUE/BUG)

I’m asking this particular question because I’m having trouble with Starfield saving. About two weeks ago, Starfield starting giving me an error “unable to save data, delete some old saves to continue saving” <something along those lines, but you get the picture. This obviously should not happen, and there is an issue here. But in doing some research on Microsoft, Reddit, Bethesda customer support, etc…. There are plenty of posts and information of people that have this bug out there. And there are plenty of answers given on possible “fixes.” It seems like everyone is trying these fixes, and for many these fixes are not working…. And when the fixes don’t work, Microsoft says contact Bethesda. Bethesda says contact Microsoft (if people say the fixes didn’t work) (research this yourself, you will see this statement to be true)

The leading “fix” to this problem is the “Clear local saved data” function via the Xbox settings. Problem is, and you can see for yourself, for many people this just isn’t working. And honestly, if you read some of these horror stories there are people losing hours and hours and hours of gameplay saves by doing this. They clear local saved data to find hours and hours are gone. My guess is, it’s the people that continued playing after receiving this error (like myself) maybe the saves stopped syncing? Idk that’s just speculation, but I sure do not want this to happen to me. I would like to somehow backup my save files to something other than the Xbox cloud before trying this fix… is that possible? Like to OneDrive? Or a USB drive? Or at the very least view what save files the cloud has? That way I know I at least have a current save backed up to the cloud before “clearing locally saved data.” If I lose my 200 hours of Starfield gameplay it is going to crush me.

I originally had 127 manual saves 2 weeks ago when this issue started. Over those 2 weeks I’ve continued playing, and all along Xbox has been popping error message telling me “delete saved data to continue saving.” So I’ve been deleting a manual saves in order to create room for new one, since I did have 127 saves after all. Problem is, when I delete a save, and then try to make another Manual save to take its place, I get the same error. So what I have to ACTUALLY do is delete 2 OLD manual saves to be able to make 1 NEW manual save.

Long story short, I went from 127 saves two weeks ago, and now I have 49 manual saves left. (In a nutshell, Delete 2 manual saves in order to make 1 new manual save). At this rate, probably within 1 more week, I will be completely out of saves. And effectively stuck and unable to save for the remainder of the game…

I would like to backup my saved data that’s on the Xbox cloud in order to try this “clear saved data” fix.

I realize my question is very lengthy and it is probably not going to make sense to a lot of people. But if you have this issue, you are going to know exactly what I’m talking about. There are a lot of us out there.

I doubt anyone’s going to have a solid answer for me. But I’m running out of options and figured I’d throw a Hail Mary and type this question up on here.

It’s a complex issue, I don’t know how to condense it and still make sense.

Thank you for your time, if you have made it to the end of my question… Good luck to all who have this issue… this is the worst and most terrifying bug in gaming! A save bug!

    :)

Can I upload my Xbox save files to OneDrive? (Addressing the STARFIELD SAVE ISSUE/BUG)

Thanks for very helpful info on game saves. Links are also helpful.

My Starfield game saves got messed up due to perhaps OneDrive.

Two out of my three created characters have gone missing. They both were well advanced in the game at level 104 and level 65.

The working character that is still showing in game is on level 40.

Any way to get my other two characters back ?

Thanks for the help and guidance in advance.

    Hello Cody George,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Community.

I understand your frustration with regards to these ongoing savings issues. To start, this type of complex issue is better addressed by the game developers in collaboration with the platform developers. I would start by asking you to report this issue to Xbox by following the guide here.

I believe the game developers are already aware of this as stated here: What do I do if I can't save my game in Starfield on PC? - Bethesda Support

They have rolled out some troubleshooting steps and some that you already mentioned.

Why am I getting error "0x80830003" telling me I'm out of space when trying to save a game? - Bethesda Support

You are low on space to save your progress. Please delete some of your existing saved content. - Save Management - Xbox App for PC - Bethesda Support

How do I fix my corrupted save file in Starfield? - Bethesda Support

What do I do if I can't save my game in Starfield on PC? - Bethesda Support

Regarding with how the game save system works in Starfield you may want to check this: How does the save system work in Starfield? - Bethesda Support

Please also see: Xbox cloud game saves FAQ | Xbox Support / Back up your game captures | Xbox Support

For now, we will stick to what they have provided and what works.

And I don't see any articles that would answer your questions using OneDrive as your backup for your save files, knowing how the save system works for Starfield. I would leave that question with the rest of the community members who had experienced this and with the game developers after you raise this issue with them on Xbox Feedback.

I will be checking this with our team as well, and I will get back to you once I have enough information.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Can I upload my Xbox save files to OneDrive? (Addressing the STARFIELD SAVE ISSUE/BUG)

Xbox consoles don't provide a direct way to back up save files to OneDrive or a USB drive. Xbox save files are automatically stored in the cloud when you're connected to Xbox Live. There isn't an official feature to manually export these saves to external storage or cloud services like OneDrive.

If you are trying to save to the OneDrive in order to upload to Youtube then you seem to be having the same issue a lot of people are having right now. I do believe that it is being worked on.

In the meantime you can do a workaround. When saving the files don't upload to the OneDrive. Simply save it. When it is saved you can head over to the Youtube app and upload the files from there.
